St. John’s songstress Melanie O’Brien releases new single “Stubborn Heart”; to embark on Atlantic Canadian tour

Stylistically veering off course from her folk-tinged 2016 debut release “Shining In The Blue”, St. John’s, NL singer/songwriter Melanie O’Brien has crafted emotive, anthemic pop tunes with her new single “Stubborn Heart” (listen above), and its B-side “When I Loved You” (click here to listen). With this shift into a new genre, Melanie’s current creative works still showcase the raw songwriting prowess and hauntingly powerful vocals that earned her two 2016 MusicNL Award nominations for Rising Star of the Year and Female Artist of the Year. These new tracks were produced by Newfoundland’s own Ian Foster, and skillfully mixed by award-winning audio engineer Scott Hammond. The recordings were made with the generous support of the City of St. John’s.

"I wrote Stubborn Heart when I was facing some real obstacles getting my music made. When that happens I often look to artists in my life that I admire - my producer and dear friend, Ian Foster, my amazing brother Mark (O'Brien), my wonderful music partner, Phil Goodridge and others. I realized that no matter where they are in life, what successes they've had or not had, the uncertainty, hard work and struggle was still very real. Yet artists prevail and they prevail stubbornly. They keep making their art - against all common sense sometimes! ....So that stubbornness is a good thing in this context. Because of it there is so much more art in the world, so much more inspiration and communication. This song feels like a tribute of sorts to all those people who continue to follow their own stubbornness and creative instincts”, says Melanie.

From producer Ian Foster; "these are two new songs she wrote this year and a musical turn that I think Mel sounds really at home in. Some big drums, some bigger synths... I had a lot of fun sculpting these sounds and these songs."

O’Brien and her musical partner Phil Goodridge are hitting the road in July to promote the new music, and will be visiting Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI on the 12-date, four-week tour:
