A quick detour off the Irish Loop on Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula will bring you to a little spot called Burnt Cove.
Truthfully, if you weren’t looking for it you might just miss it…it’s that small, but thanks to Carmel Boland and her Ocean View Bakery, more and more folks are finding the compact community. A destination now for tourists and locals alike – Carmel’s fresh baked bread, Apple Flips and Cinnamon Rolls are being bought up as fast as she can make them.
We were pleased to join the busy baker in the kitchen for a crash course in another one of her crowd pleasers – Mars Bar Squares.
At the end of the session we had learned a great recipe, but more importantly we had heard a great story – of a woman who, when one chapter ended, turned the page and persevered – honing her skills, building a business and realizing with hard work anything is possible.
