Nix Wadden – No Place Like Home In Newfoundland & Labrador

Occupation: Writer

Place of Birth: St. John's, NL

Currently Resides: Ottawa, ON

Where’s your favourite place in Newfoundland & Labrador to grab a coffee?

A Tim's maybe, but I'd rather go for a pot of properly steeped black tea which you can get in most places in Newfoundland, but rarely on the mainland.

Where is your favourite place in Newfoundland & Labrador to go for lunch?

Rumplestiltskin's in the Harbourview Quality Inn on the Hill o'Chips in St. John's. Good food, friendly service and great view of the best harbour on the east coast.

Where’s your favourite place in Newfoundland & Labrador to grab a pint?

Used to be either the Cochrane Hotel or Freddy Phelan's Cottage Garden Tea Rooms. Now both are long gone, and so is my ability (damn doctors!) to drink beer.

Where’s your favourite place to shop in Newfoundland & Labrador?

The Babylon Mall (aka Avalon Mall) – especially Coles.

Where in Newfoundland & Labrador would we stand to see your favourite view?

Signal Hill – where else? Magnificent view in all directions. Always ships coming and going through the Narrows, often a delicious fog bank threatening to roll on shore, commanding view of uniquely secure harbour, broad city scapes and cliffside walkers doing what I wished I had done when I was younger.

Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit Newfoundland & Labrador:

1. Woody Point, Bonne Bay and Western Brook Pond
2. Middle Cove and all of the Marine Drive
3. Conception Bay – everywhere along the shore line

What makes Newfoundland & Labrador such a special place on earth for you?

It's where I belong, even after nearly five decades upalong. Matchless scenery, friendliest people, regard for others, tolerance, mutual respect – above all, enduring sense of humour.
