TIFF 2015 …The East Coast Notes

Posted: August 5, 2015

Today was a BIG day for film festival announcements - the Atlantic Film Festival released its 2015 Atlantic TIFF 2015Canadian line up (post) and the Toronto International Film Festival shared the balance of the Canadian movies they'll be featuring at their 40th Annual event this September 10 - 20,  2015.  You can check out the full line up of Canadian films by clicking here but we wanted to share a few of the East Coast notes....

Academy Award Nominated Halifax born actress Ellen Page stars in two of this year's films making their World Premiere at TIFF.  Firstly the much anticipated Gala Presentation of FREEHELD (trailer above) with Julianne Moore, Steve Carell and Michael Shannon "in this true story about terminally ill New Jersey police officer Laurel Hester, whose 2005 legal battle to pass on her pension benefits to her domestic partner became a flashpoint for LGBT activism." Secondly INTO THE FOREST in which Page stars alongside Evan Rachel Wood in the film about "two teenage sisters who struggle to survive in a remote country house after a massive, continent-wide power outage, in this gripping apocalyptic thriller from director Patricia Rozema (Mansfield Park, I've Heard the Mermaids Singing)."

St.John's, NL born filmmaker Stephen Dunn will see the World Premiere of his debut feature film at this year's TIFF. CLOSET MONSTER tells the tale of an "East Coast teenager and aspiring special-effects makeup artist (Connor Jessup, Blackbird) who struggles with both his sexuality and his fear of his macho father, in this imaginative twist on the coming-of-age tale."

Also making it's World Premiere in Gala Presentation - FORSAKEN in which Saint John, NB born legend Donald Sutherland and son Kiefer Sutherland share the screen.  The film is a "brooding western about an embittered gunslinger who attempts to make amends with his estranged father whilst their community is besieged by ruthless land-grabbers."

As previously anticipated (and later announced) Allan Hawco's forthcoming Paul Gross film HYENA ROAD will be also be among those World Premiere films featured in Gala Presentation.

Another cool East Coast note.... Nova Scotia born filmmaker Ashley McKenzie will see her short film 4 QUARTERS make its Toronto Premiere at TIFF2015 too.
