(Halifax, NS) – The 35th annual Atlantic Film Festival proudly launches its program of Atlantic Canadian film selections, including the much-anticipated Atlantic Gala, to be presented over eight days in Halifax, September 17-24.

"The promotion and support of the best and brightest working here in Atlantic Canada is more important than ever," said Jason Beaudry, Program Director. "We couldn’t be more excited about the 2015 Atlantic program. These films are made with our own stories in our own voices, and as a whole they are a celebration of who we are and where we live."

This year’s Bell Aliant Blue Carpet Atlantic Gala features the Atlantic Canada premiere of Closet Monster, a spectacular first feature from breakout Newfoundland talent, Stephen Dunn. Written and directed by Dunn, Closet Monster screens at Park Lane Cinemas on Friday, Sept. 18, with a celebration to follow at the Argyle Grill and Bar. This coming-of-age drama tells the story of Oscar Madly, a teenager desperate to escape his hometown, broken family and ghosts of a traumatic childhood. A talking hamster, imagination, and the prospect of love help him confront his surreal demons and discover himself.

Danny Thebeau’s Owl River Runners is a comedic coming of age story set in small town New Brunswick. Caley MacLennan’s Noon Gun takes a hard look at race relations in Halifax’s North End. Documentarian Kent Martin’s Wayne’s Deer presents a portrait of a man who has spent a lifetime studying deer and fighting for their place in our world.
