STAR WARS Celebration 2015 Guest Video & Post

Posted: April 27, 2015

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away.... truth be told, right here on Earth, in Oakville, Ontario to be exact during the summer of 1977... the universe shifted!

STAR WARS 1977 movie posterThese days it's referred to as Episode IV - A New Hope but I'm talking about when it was just STAR WARS.  It opened in theatres and we were off!!!  Yes - I listened to the movie on vinyl everyday. Yes - I have a Princess Leia doll.  Yes - I thought Mark Hamill was the dreamiest. It was all so very awesome.

I'm not sure anyone could have imagined then how big a phenomenon it would become except for perhaps my brother who spent his summer back then putting together model after model - first the X-Wing fighter, then the Millennium Falcon and on and on. And as the franchise grew and the movie posters began to cover the walls his love of all things Lucas was cemented.

Wonderful then - all these many years in the future - he was able to attend the big 2015 STAR WARS Celebration and share this report with us!

Full circle for sure - thanks Jike! SABS

People from around the globe converged on the Anaheim Convention Center in California to attend STAR WARS Celebration. It's a time of the year when STAR WARS fans get together to celebrate all things related to the George Lucas creation. From movies to comic books, from toys to costumes, there's something for just about every fan to enjoy.

I had the great opportunity to attend the festivities and experience STAR WARS Celebration for the first time. And let me tell you, I was in my element. No matter where I went or what line I stood in, everyone was into STAR WARS and ready to talk all things Force-related at the drop of a lightsaber.

The four-day event started with a star-studded panel featuring Kathleen Kennedy, Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm who introduced J.J. Abrams, director of STAR WARS: The Force Awakens. After bringing out the cast of the film including original stars such as Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels and Peter Mayhew, fans were treated to a eye-popping, mouth-gaping teaser  for the upcoming film slated to debut on December 18. 2015.

And then things just kept going from there.

I joined fellow fans to sit in on a variety of panels related to STAR WARS. These included NASA Exploration, the journalism of STAR WARS, podcast panels such as Fangirls Going Rogue, new Disney STAR WARS merchandise, and much more.

Fans lined up for a glimpse of the much anticipated video game STAR WARS Battlefront. Although the crowds were just too much for me, I heard that it was a big hit and I can't wait to play the game this fall/winter.

In addition to actors and executives, STAR WARS Celebration also paid tribute to the artists who make the stories come alive in comic books. I had the privilege of meeting Katie Cook and Randy Martinez, who both took time to support the STAR WARS Family Room where they taught children how to draw their favourite characters from a galaxy far, far away.

Vendors were selling lightsabers, collectible action figures, games and more. Attendees could experience unique attractions such as a life-size Rancor, AT-AT walkers, droid building, and to complete the experience even get a STAR WARS tattoo (I politely declined that offer).

Fans also had the opportunity to meet and greet STAR WARS actors from all the films and TV shows. Friends of mine stood for hours to get their action figures signed by their real life counterparts.

STAR WARS Celebration was exactly that - it truly was a great time had by all. I'm grateful to have experienced the friendly, exciting environment of the panels, exhibit halls and celebrity appearances.

STAR WARS Celebration-Europe 2016Tickets are already on sale for the next STAR WARS Celebration slated for London, UK in July 2016. After that, who knows where it will be, but I know one thing for sure - STAR WARS fans will be there celebrating and enjoying the fellowship from around the world. JMS
