HAVEN CREW Who’s Who – Jason Shurko

Posted: October 2, 2014

HAVENHere at Sea and be Scene we've been in love with HAVEN since it began and we've enjoyed every minute of profiling the stars and guest stars of the show.  That's an affinity now shared by millions of folks - as the cast of HAVEN is beloved around the world. But just as it takes a 'Village to Keep A Secret'... it also takes one to make the magic we've been enjoying for the past four seasons.

So as the HAVEN team works throughout the fall to bring us a super-sized season 5 - we're celebrating the people behind the scenes.  It's our salute to the production team - the HAVEN CREW Who's Who series - in this edition we're giving huge props to a man who's been propping up HAVEN from the get-go.... meet Jason Shurko.

What exactly does a property master do?

The Property Master is in charge of all the props on the show. A prop (often confused with set dressing, its Art Department counterpart) is any object that an actor handles or interacts with on camera.

After I read a new HAVEN script, I consult with the Director, the Production Designer, and also with the actors themselves to come up with the perfect prop for the scene. Every prop needs to be located, purchased, modified or built from scratch, and in a timely manner.

I work with an amazing team of assistants, builders, buyers and on-set supervisors who help me accomplish this.

What's the worst "trouble" you've seen in HAVEN?

I think for me the worst trouble would have to belong to Lewis Pufahl (Hugo Speer) in Episode 203 "Love Machine" – all of the machines he worked on came to life, wreaking havoc across HAVEN. Being a Props Master on a show like HAVEN, I’ve accumulated a pretty nasty army of deadly creatures.

film-b (2)What's the best part of working on HAVEN?

The absolute best part of working on HAVEN is rising to the challenge of the scripts. Every week I find myself looking for or creating something cool and unique. Not every show has a props list like this one.

Here are a few examples...

raining frogs, a sub-aquatic inductor, a burnt skeleton, an other-worldly flower, a ‘rougarou’ detector, swords, magical puzzles, a crossbow, and killer monkeys …

I mean … who wouldn’t love this job?!

SHURKO FAMILY enjoying Nova Scotia

film medWhat's your favourite thing to do in Nova Scotia when you're not filming HAVEN?

The top of the list would simply be hanging with my family (my wife, Elizabeth, and our twins James and Emily). Together we enjoy building snowmen in the winter, snorkeling at the beach in the summer, getting ready for Halloween in the fall, and as much time around the campfire at the cottage as we can squeeze in.

And finally...Audrey & Nathan or Audrey & Duke?

Well, it’s got to be Nathan. Let’s give the guy a break. He can only feel the touch of one person ...
