Flanker Press Announces New Book Project

ST. JOHN’S, NL: October is Autism Awareness Month in Canada, and this year Flanker Press is partnering with the Autism Society, Newfoundland and Labrador (ASNL) to announce a very special book project.

flankerAutism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neural development disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behaviour. As a parent of an autistic child, Jerry Cranford, co-owner of Flanker Press, recognizes the need to raise autism awareness, education, and acceptance. Wednesday, April 2, 2014, was World Autism Awareness Day, and Flanker Press united with the ASNL to help increase autism awareness and to raise money for the society. Flanker Press committed to donating the retail price of all books sold through its website, www.flankerpress.com, on April 2 to the society.

ASNL awarenessFlanker Press is pleased to team up once again with the ASNL with the publication of a collection of stories about autism. The book will feature accounts written by parents of children with autism, professionals trained to treat autism, and individuals who themselves are on the autism spectrum. The stories will provide practical information to those with a connection to autism and will help general readers understand what autism is and what life with autism is like. The book, as yet untitled, will be published by Flanker Press on April 2, 2015. It will be made available for sale through regular sales channels, in both print and ebook formats, and all royalties will be donated to the ASNL.

NORMA & GLADYS by Garry CranfordFlanker Press began as a self-publishing venture in St. John’s in 1994 with the release of Garry Cranford’s book, Newfoundland Schooner Norma & Gladys: Her Story of Industry, Mutiny & Triumph. Now located in Paradise, the company has eight full-time employees and has published over two hundred books, including many award winners and bestsellers. This year Flanker Press is celebrating twenty years of publishing quality books in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Autism Society, Newfoundland and Labrador is a provincial charitable organization dedicated to promoting the development of individual, lifelong, and community-based supports and services for people with autism spectrum disorder, their families, and caregivers. The ASNL operates four regional offices, along with three volunteer chapters, and is active in awareness raising, advocacy, and outreach across the province for all individuals and families affected by the disorder.

“We’re very excited about this project,” says Jerry Cranford. “Recent statistics from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) state that about 1 in 68 children has been identified with ASD according to estimates from CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network, an alarming increase from 1 in 88 in the previous surveillance year. These figures highlight the need for increased vigilance from parents, medical personnel, educators, politicians, and autism advocates to help those affected by the disorder lead productive and happy lives. We’re hoping our book will help people better understand ASD and the challenges faced by individuals who are on the autism spectrum and their families.”
