JOHN DUNSWORTH #FFF Friday Favourite Four

Posted: September 26, 2014

It’s Friday and after a bit of break we're back with the Sea and be Scene Friday Favourite Four.  The #FFF is your weekly chance to discover the four favourites of your favourite East Coast folks. The four questions will always stay the same... only the folks will change.…

This week our spotlight turns to one of Atlantic Canada's most venerable actors - on stage and screen both big and small, and radio too!  Add to his list of credits author, casting director, theatre director, acting instructor, avid sailor, master bridge player, superior craftsman and you've only just begun to scratch the surface of his talents.

Born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia he began acting elementary school, but it was during his years at the University of Guelph that he fell in love with drama - performing lead roles in The Merchant of Venice and The Masque of Wilde.

When he returned to Halifax in the early 1970s he co-founded Pier 1 on the Halifax Waterfront – the first alternate professional theatre on the east coast. He directed and acted there and for Theatre Canada in Newfoundland; taught at Dalhousie University and directed productions for many theatre companies including a dozen comic operas for the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Nova Scotia.

John Dunsworth in FORGIVE ME & TRAILER PARK BOYSSince those early days he’s acted in dozens of radio plays at CBC, and in more than 25 roles at Neptune and various other theatres in Nova Scotia. In the early ‘80s, he co-founded Filmworks Casting, which has cast hundreds of films over the last 30 years.

As for his own on-screen acting credits - the list is approaching 70 with everything from made for TV movies like JESSE STONE: Stone Cold LIZZIE BORDEN TOOK AN AX and THE CHRISTMAS SHOES, to series work on shows like PIT PONY, LEXX and most recently Thom Fitzgerald's FORGIVE ME as The Prelate, for which he won an ACTRA Best Actor Award.  There are numerous film roles as well,  in everything from THE SHIPPING NEWS to CLOUDBURST to BEAT DOWN to his latest turn TRAILER PARK BOYS 3: Don't Legalize It.

To be ,he's been stumbling and swearing his way across TV sets and movie screens as Sunnyvale Trailer Park Supervisor Jim Lahey since the '90s and with 3 features films, 9 seasons of the series and a comedy tour of the "Randy and Lahey Show" to boot - that role is still going strong.

And since 2010 we've been caught up in the mystery that surrounds his character Dave Teagues on the hit Syfy/Showcase series HAVEN.  Between you and me I was never quite comfortable with the bespectacled half of the HAVEN Herald news team and as season 4 ended my fears were affirmed.

Dave HAVENNow as the fifth and super-sized season of HAVEN begins - what fate awaits Dave and the rest of the troubled village is anyone's guess - but you can bet we'll be watching EVERY awesome minute to find out.

As well we're looking forward to his next big turn on the big screen in SANTA QUEST - due out this Christmas.

He is talented, he is charming, he is delightful and oh so de-lovely.... he is Mr.John Dunsworth.

How lucky are we that he has shared his four favourites with us! SABS
