REPUBLIC OF DOYLE Bittersweet Season 6

Posted: June 1, 2014

I can't tell you how many times I've started writing this post and hit the delete key only to start all over again.  I won't guarantee coherence, sentence structure or proper spelling for that matter.

allan hawco tweet may 29 2014If you're a fan of the show like I am it's hard to know where to begin.  I mean - if we weren't distraught enough already over the heart wrenching finale of season 5 - we were gutted this past week, when during the CBC UpFront Allan Hawco confirmed season 6 would be the last for REPUBLIC OF DOYLE.

Now for the record - if you'd watched my interview with Mr.Hawco in Toronto this past March - you would have gleaned, as I did, that the show was winding towards its finish.  Here's the transcript...

SABStv: I feel really confident 6 is coming.

Allan Hawco: You do?

SABStv:  I do! Because how could you possibly leave us like that?

Allan Hawco: I wouldn't - you know what - even if we weren't or couldn't for some reason do another season, I think I would do a feature film. So hopefully we're gonna do a sixth season.

SABStv:   You do would do a feature film - what - to make it good for the fans?

Allan Hawco: Yup. Because I left this with an ending in mind - Perry Chafe and I..... we set that up with an ending in mind so we're gonna do it regardless - someway.

You can watch the full extended interview for yourself here - and it's important to reiterate at this time for anyone who's still unclear - the show was NOT cancelled. The creators have decided to wrap up DOYLE on their terms.  I respect that.  I don't have to like it necessarily - but I give them all the credit in the world for going out on a high note and - with any luck - they'll leave a few doors open for a future feature film or a made for TV movie or two.  I still have my heart set on the VERY DOYLE CHRISTMAS Special (a girl can dream).

But for now,  here we are - at the beginning of the end.

ahtThis week the cast and crew will convene in St.John's, NL to start work on Season 6 - and while it will only contain 10 episodes - Allan Hawco himself assured us via twitter - they'll be "going out with a bang".

We'll keep you posted as production continues through the summer - with some exclusive features and (fingers crossed) some more on-camera fun. Rest assured we here at Sea and be Scene are going to make the most of what time we have left in the REPUBLIC OF DOYLE. SABS
