HAVEN CREW Who’s Who – The ZUCKERMAN Sisters

Posted: September 9, 2013

There's no denying our huge affection for the folks in front of the camera - the cast of HAVEN is beloved around the world. But just as it takes a Village to Keep A Secret... it also takes one to make the magic we've been enjoying for the past three seasons. So as the HAVEN team works through the summer of 2013 with the goal of bringing Season 4 to our screens this fall/winter - we are celebrating the people behind the scenes.  It's our salute to the production team - the HAVEN Crew Who's Who series - continuing now with two ladies who have made dealing with the troubles a family affair... sisters Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman.

film rollWhat exactly does a Consulting Producer do?

Consulting Producer is really just a fancy title for a writer/producer.  We "break" our episodes (it sounds violent, but it means we determine the story, beat by beat) with the rest of the writers and help them with theirs, and when our episodes are up and ready, we go off and hide and write the script.  Just as we are about to go crazy from isolation, production starts – and we get to interact with the outside world again. When our episode is about to shoot, we help get it on its feet, from casting to production issues, and try to work with the other producers to keep the story intact while making the script shootable.  It's a lot of creative problem-solving from both sides.  Then we fly out to Nova Scotia for the shoot, and help out with issues on the set – sometimes rewriting on the fly. We get to work closely with the directors and the actors, and it’s pretty awesome.

What's the worst "trouble" you've seen in HAVEN?

Nora: This season I think the exploding mosquito population has got to be the biggest trouble I've experienced on HAVEN.  They seem to particularly like me, so no amount of bug spray works at combating them.  If we were to do a mosquito-themed episode this year, we wouldn't need any special effects, all I would have to do is stand just off camera and they would swarm.

Lilla: Proper footwear. I never seem to have the right shoes for the right weather, I don’t know how the Nova Scotians do it!  Then the crew tipped me off to this amazing shoe store in Mahone Bay – they had every kind of super-cute, multi-weather shoe – it was incredible.

film roll 2What's the best part of working on HAVEN?

The people.  We have a fantastic writers' room in Los Angeles, and we love absolutely everybody we work with.  Since we spend most of the day together in a room, it's helpful to like the people around you.  The same goes for the people who work on the show in Nova Scotia -- we really enjoy being on set and connecting with the actors, directors, and the whole crew.  The people we work with in Los Angeles and Nova Scotia are fantastic, and we think we're pretty spoiled to get to work with such a great group.

What's your favourite thing to do in Nova Scotia when you're not filming HAVEN?

We love going to Halifax on the weekends.  It's such a fun city, we end up just walking around, checking out the restaurants and bars.  Everybody on the crew has been great about sharing their favorite haunts with us.

Seaside Shanty Chowder

Nora: I've also become a collector of local seafood chowders, and my local favorite was the chowder at the Seaside Shanty in Chester Basin - it's a charming place with great food and a view of the water.  I can't believe we didn't get there sooner. The chowder at The Galley is a close second.  If I had more time, I could really get into the "Chowder Trail" you see advertised.

film-roll2Lilla: We’re also trying out some local wine. We were really into ice wine during Season 3 of HAVEN, but I think Season 4 has been all about the white. We found a great place in Halifax called Obladee Wine Bar, and that’s where we found our current favorite – Luckett Ortega.

And finally... Audrey & Nathan or Audrey & Duke?

Nora: As a writer, it would be unfair for me to take a position on this very sensitive issue.  It will live on twitter forever and I'll be blamed for all sorts of things.

Emily Rose (Audrey Parker) & Jason Priestley (Chris Brody) HAVENLilla: This is going to sound really controversial but... neither! I was always partial to Chris Brody (played by Jason Priestley) in Season 2.  And I swear it has everything to do with how fun it was to write his character, not about Priestley. Really.

Be sure to follow the ladies on Twitter! They'll be live tweeting during all of their episodes and they'll be providing behind the scenes photos from the sets as the episodes air… And besides they're GREAT fun!!!
