Lauren Hammersley – At Home Here in Nova Scotia

Occupation: Actress

Place of Birth: Campbell River, BC but raised in Surrey

Currently Resides: Live in Toronto, ON & spend Summers in Halifax, NS

Where’s your favourite place in Nova Scotia to grab a coffee?

Typically only have one coffee in the morning, so I go to Choco Cafe on Lower Water Street. It's close, the coffee is consistently good, and the people are equally friendly.

Where’s your favourite place in Nova Scotia to grab a pint?

I'm not much of a drinker anymore, but last summer I'd enjoy working my way through the cocktail lists at Gio in the Prince George hotel and The Bicycle Thief.

Where's your favourite spot in Nova Scotia to grab a bite to eat?

I have a pescatarian and organic diet... meaning, I'm picky.   I'm trying to eat as healthy as I possibly can and that's annoying to a lot of restaurants.  I like any place that tries to be health-aware:

Janes on the Common: I have never had such great service and food anywhere else in Halifax. I love this place.

Fid's: The Good Bowl for breakfast is to die for.  I would have never thought that a yogurt granola bowl would work with peanut butter and goat cheese - YUM!

Chives Canadian Bistro: Delicious gourmet food with healthy options and the art is lovely.

Where’s your favourite place to shop in Nova Scotia?

This one will be quite a list...

I love Biscuit on Argyle - the owner is a great buyer and the staff offer exceptional customer service.  I've always had great experiences there. I actually feel like I've made friends with the staff at Biscuit... Or, at least, my dog Olive has.

Pretty Things Boutique for all your Pin-up girl needs. The owner has started incorporating more of her own designs and there is a great selection of sexy dresses and bathing suits for full-figured women - so great, in fact, that shopping that section makes me WANT to gain weight.

Sugar Daisy Boutique in Truro, NS.  Selection as sweet as its name! If you aren't in Truro, this amazing shop has a great website to shop on. Good websites, especially e-commerce ones have been in my experience, a slow growing  industry here - but not at Sugar Daisy!

Sweet Pea Boutique - Adorable dresses, great service and a lovely shop!

Art: For the past four years I've bought a piece of art from Halifax, my favorite galleries being:

Argyle Fine Art - I love their collections! Showing whimsical and unique Nova Scotian art, this gallery also is very involved in the community, having shows to bring awareness to mental health, or raising money for owl rescue. Just this year, I bought a Melissa Townsend Owl named Leroy and can't wait to bring him home. They also show pieces in Chive Canadian Bistro.

Seeds Gallery - A great place to start a collection or discover student artists. This is the NSCAD gallery where the students and alumni show their work.

Page and Strange Gallery - Owned by Victoria Page and Victoria Strange, usually they only show one artist at a time. In their gallery, I've typically found 'corporate art’ size and price, but their collection is vast and can be seen on their website or smaller paintings will often show at Gio Restaurant in the Prince George Hotel. It's a very 'professional' gallery and might be intimidating, but they are very accommodating if you go in for a visit and tell them what you're looking for.

Where in Nova Scotia would we stand to see your favourite view?

Anywhere on the water or in Point Pleasant Park.

Name 3 things I’ve gotta do when I visit Nova Scotia:

1. An Art Crawl: The artists here are talented and valued, and don't necessarily need to leave home to gain recognition, which I love.

2. Go to creepy antique shops off the beaten path: Just a week ago I found a box of human teeth for $8... who would buy that?  That's entertainment!

3. Go to the Farmer's Market and buy organic stuff.

What makes Nova Scotia such a special place on earth for you?

It's a beautiful place with a culture rich in the arts and land rich for farming.  It's coastal, so I sometimes feel like I'm in BC, where I'm from, but it's a slower, friendlier place here which throws off my acquired Torontonian 'on guardedness'.  Every year I come to Halifax, I feel welcomed by the city.  I've fallen in love with it, and it's people.
