Chris LeDrew – At Home Here in Newfoundland & Labrador

Occupation: Musician, English Instructor

Place of Birth: St. John’s, NL

Currently Resides: St. John’s, NL

Where’s your favourite place in Newfoundland & Labrador to grab a coffee?

I only drink coffee when I’m very, very tired, so I don’t really have a particular place I go. I usually steal whatever my wife has left in the coffee maker at home if I really need a boost. Otherwise it’s Tetley for me, and I get that at home as well.

Where’s your favourite place in Newfoundland & Labrador to grab a pint?

I don’t have a “local” as such, but one of my bandmates Tino Borges owns a bar called the Bull and Barrel just off George Street, and I can be found there from time to time hanging out with other musicians. It’s sort of poked away and off the main strip, which is nice. You don’t have to wait very long to get served, which is my main goal above all.

Where’s your favourite place to shop in Newfoundland & Labrador?

I just go to Mark’s Work Warehouse or the mall if I need clothes. I’m not that stylish of a guy these days. I used to be into the thrift shops in my 20s but now they just make me sneeze and itch when I go in there. Most of my shopping is for musical equipment anyway, and I do much of that at Reid Music which is close to my house.

Where in Newfoundland & Labrador would we stand to see your favourite view?

Just before you get to the lights at the intersection of Prince Phillip Drive and Empire Avenue driving North, you can get a view of St. John’s and the narrows at an unexpected height. It always catches my eye as I’m driving by. My other favourite place is a salmon fishing pool on Conne River, but you’d have to hike in quite a ways to see that one.

Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit Newfoundland & Labrador:

1. Flyfish for salmon

2. Eat at India Gate in St. John’s

3. Swim in the Atlantic

What makes Newfoundland & Labrador such a special place on earth for you?

Man, that’s a hard one to articulate. There’s a certain pride in being a Newfoundlander; so much is behind that unique claim. It feels good. This island is like a haven from the world. Every time I travel I look forward to getting back home. There’s a magnet that keeps me firmly planted here. I love the arts here: music, painting, literature, drama, etc. We have it all. And I feel like we are removed just enough from the rest of the world that we’re keeping a bit of a secret in a way. It’s nice to be part of that.
