Smiling Jack on the IceCaps Report #11

Posted: December 12, 2011

The St. John's IceCaps were busy during the past week playing four games in six days.

In the game on Tuesday, December 6, the IceCaps defeated the Syracuse Crunch 4-3 at Mile One Centre.

L - Patrice Cormier R - Zach RedmondPatrice Cormier (Moncton, NB) with a single and Zack Redmond with two, were among the goal scorers for the IceCaps.

On Wednesday, December 7, the Crunch turned the tables and the IceCaps were on the short end of a 5-3 score, with Kyle Palmieri netting a hat trick for the victors.

Ben MaxwellOn Friday, December 9, the IceCaps blew a two-goal lead in a 4-3 loss to the Worcester Sharks. Patrice Cormier finished off an odd man rush after a nifty pass from newcomer Ben Maxwell to score one of the Caps goals.

On Sunday, December 11, the Sharks came back from a two-goal deficit for their second straight win, this time by a score of 5-3. As was the case on Friday, the third period proved to be the IceCaps' undoing.

Despite picking up only two of a possible eight points during their home stand, St. John's is tied with Manchester Monarchs for first place in the Atlantic division  of the Eastern Conference. The IceCaps and Monarchs share the lead in the overall 15 team Eastern Conference and are tied for fourth place in the 30-team American Hockey League.

Head Coach Keith McCambridgeUndoubtedly, coach Keith McCambridge is concerned that the third period, which was once so kind to the IceCaps in seeing them score impressive come-from-behind victories, now entails second period leads evaporating into losses.

L - John Albert R - Shawn WellerTwo of the better defensive forwards for the IceCaps, John Albert and Shawn Weller, were out of the lineup for the past four games.

Jason KingAdditionally, Jason King (Corner Brook, NL) a great two-way player, was injured during the Tuesday contest and didn't see action in the remaining three home games.

When these three players get back into action, which is expected shortly, it should make a positive difference in IceCaps third period performance.

Teddy Bears donated to IceCaps for Salvation Army Christmas 2011 at game 12.11.11A great moment that deserves mention - happened during Sunday's game...when between the 2nd and 3rd period the ice was flooded with Teddy Bears. Fans showed their generosity by donating Teddy's to the team for distribution by the Salvation Army - a very merry moment inside Mile One to be sure

The IceCaps are off to New England where they will play the Manchester Monarchs on Friday December 16 and the Portland Pirates on Saturday, December 17, and again on Sunday, December 18. Then it's off for the Christmas break until Wednesday December 28 when they meet the Hamilton Bulldogs at Copps Coliseum.
