Sean Panting – At Home Here in Newfoundland & Labrador

Occupation: Musician/Actor

Place of Birth: St. John’s, NL

Currently Resides: St. John’s, NL

Where’s your favourite place in Newfoundland & Labrador to grab a coffee?

I have a few, but recently it’s been Rocket Bakery on Water Street. Good coffee. Insanely fantastic chocolate croissants, too.

Where’s your favourite place in Newfoundland & Labrador to grab a pint?

Again, it’s hard to keep it to one, so I’ll have to say:  a) The Duke of Duckworth, or b) if I’m looking for music to go with that pint (and I generally am) The Ship Pub.

Where’s your favourite place to shop in Newfoundland & Labrador?

I’m not much for shopping, but when I do it’s O’Brien’s on Water for strings and picks and Fred’s Records for music.

Where in Newfoundland would we stand to see your favourite view?

On a boat on Western Brook Pond in Gros Morne National Park. One word, people: fjords.

Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit Newfoundland & Labrador:

1. Eat fish and chips at Keith’s in the Goulds. Not only are the folks at Keith’s masters of golden foods, but the Goulds itself is a place that produces a disproportionate number of arts geniuses. Coincidence?

2. If you ever have a chance to travel the trans-Labrador highway, make sure to stop your car, get out and marvel at how quiet and beautiful it is. Labrador totally gets the shaft when it comes to infrastructure funding, so a trip on the TLH will destroy your shocks, but it’s gorgeous all the same.

3. Spend a night bouncing around between The Ship, The Rose and The Rockhouse in St. John’s. The best music you’ll ever hear in three bars not ten minutes apart.

What makes Newfoundland & Labrador such a special place on earth for you?

I love the darkness and dryness of the humour, the love of language, politics and debate and the friendliness that simply cannot be beaten out of people here. Stephen Harper hates our guts, too. I can think of no higher recommendation.
