JASON BARRY “It’ll Always be Music”

Posted: September 9, 2011

Right now the Canadian Country Music Association is gathering in Hamilton, ON and over the course of the 4 day event there were will be meeting and greeting, playing and singing and a healthy heapin’ of awards to be doled out.

A familiar face will be among the thousands in attendance – a familiar name amidst the many talented nominees – Jason Barry

Jason Barry performing 2The multi-award winning New Brunswick native is once again nominated multiple times – and will once again team up with some of Canada’s greatest musicians in concert and on the big televised award show Monday night (09/12/11).

Now, in the spirit of full disclosure, we will admit we think the world of Jason Barry – but in that opinion we are not alone.  Matter of fact there’s a crowd of folk - from Napanee to Nashville, from the far West to here at home in the Atlantic Provinces - that applaud him for his talents, respect him for his craft and appreciate him for his friendship.

Hey Jason - we celebrate you & we salute you!!!! SABS

We caught up with Jason earlier this week to catch up on things in his world - what follows is our Q&A as they say…

SABS:  It’s always wonderful to see those nominations come out each year – and see your name all over the place…that recognition has got to feel pretty good…

JASON BARRY: I'm always flattered by the nominations. It feels good to stay current.

Jason Barry with Terri ClarkSABS: Judging by the nominations for production and studio - you’ve worked on some amazing projects this year - Any highlights you care to share?

JASON BARRY: When working with artists like Terri Clark, Dean Brody, Shane Yellowbird, Jason Blaine, Aaron Lines, Charlie Major, Tebey and Tara Oram there are always lots of memorable moments.

 the late Terry Sumsion

This year working with Terry Sumsion as he battled with cancer and lost...

handing him his final product weeks before his passing was a very emotional one.
SABS: I was fortunate to have toured with you back in the day so I know how deserving you are of the All-Star band award – how has the road treated you this year?

JASON BARRY: I've spent most of the summer playing with Dean Brody and a few shows with Terri Clark, Shane Yellowbird and Aaron Lines...it's so fun to play their music live, but I have to say it's been nice to have those M&M's back on the rider too!!!

note from Dean Brody bout Jason Barry

SABS: You’ve worked on some beyond incredible shows for CMT – with the A-List artists – what’s that like?

JASON BARRY: I have to admit that it's intense - as there's zero margin for error.  My job mostly includes recording, capturing and mixing some of the biggest acts.

CMT Specials top clockwise Lady A, Sugarland, Keith Urban, Jann Arden, Blue Rodeo & Taylor SwiftShows like Keith Urban, Taylor Swift, Lady Antebellum, Lyle Lovett, Terri Clark, Sugarland, Blue Rodeo, Jann Arden, Dirks Bentley, Sara Evans, Joe Nichols, Dixie Chicks, Steve Earl, Lonestar, Kevin Costner just to name a few (You can see a complete list of Jason’s CMT credits at www.jasonbarry.org

SABS: And if that’s not enough I hear you’re doing some outstanding soundtrack work!

JASON BARRY: Yeah, I've been busy working in post audio mixing TV shows and movies for different networks in the US and Canada, as well as writing scores for some of those shows.
Jason Barry & Aaron Lines at CCMA'sSABS: Artists have come and gone from the CCMA circuit – one tried and true talent on the award show is You!

It always looks like you’re having a blast on the broadcast – do you love it?

JASON BARRY: Absolutely I do....still always nervous.......  but once they count it in....I'm there guitar amps on 'stun'!

SABS: With so many years in the business – so many accomplishments – can you harken back to your first gig?

JASON BARRY: My first gig was playing drums for a variety band on the Miramichi.....my mouth was so dry I thought I was going to die....I was hooked!

SABS: Putting you on the spot…maybe, but since you’ve got so many gigs on the go I wondered – producer, musician, businessman, etc. etc. – do you have a favourite?

JASON: Music....it'll always be music!
