Carmel Mikol – At Home Here in Nova Scotia

Occupation: Songwriter and touring artist

Place of Birth:  North River, Cape Breton Island, N.S.

Currently Resides:  Halifax, N.S.

Where’s your favourite place in Nova Scotia to grab a coffee?

Sydney’s new Wentworth Perk on George Street is a great meeting spot for local art, music and caffeine ( And the Paper Chase Cafe on Blowers Street in downtown Halifax is often my “office” when I’m not on tour.

Where’s your favourite place in Nova Scotia to grab a pint?

I’m embarrassed to admit this one took me a while - it’s like asking what my favourite film is - there’s too many to choose from! But if favourites must be made, Tom’s Little Havana in Halifax is a warm, intimate place to chat over a pint and the Seahorse is great for running into friends and catching live music.

Where’s your favourite place to shop in Nova Scotia?

I find treasures anywhere along the Artisan’s Loop on the Cabot Trail, especially at Leatherworks in Indian Brook, Wildfire Pottery (and books!) on the North Shore, and Wreck Cove General Store. If I’m in the city, I rely on Argyle Fine Art Gallery to keep me up to date on cool, local art and craftsmanship.

Where in Nova Scotia would we stand to see your favourite view?

Drive out at around seven-thirty p.m. in the summer or fall. Pull off to the edge of the Cabot Trail at Goose Cove and watch the light fade over the Cove and St. Ann’s Bay. That’s about five minutes from my family home in Cape Breton, and one of my favourite views.

Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit Nova Scotia:

 1. See local art and music at our many galleries and live music venues

2. Get lobster/crab/muscles from the wharf and cook them in seawater over a fire on the beach

3. Walk, run or ride a bike whenever possible so you can breathe in the fresh air and get a real sense of the place

What makes Nova Scotia such a special place on earth for you?

It’s my home. And the only place I love more than the road…
