It's a Wonderful Life

My # 1 Movie - It's a Wonderful Life (1946) (Liberty Films)

There are Christmas movies and then there are CHRISTMAS movies – those that are not just films to be enjoyed around the holiday season – but motion pictures that have become a part of the festive fabric of this special time of year.  It’s a Wonderful Life is one of those – and it’s not only my favourite Christmas movie of all time – it’s my favourite movie period.  Jimmy Stewart stars in this story of George Bailey - his fateful Christmas Eve and all that came before it – both with him and without …always makes me think.  If you stop to realize just how many lives you touch in the course of a day, a year, a lifetime – it really is incredible.  It makes me want to do better.

This story is one that has been told so many times in so many different ways - in fact my #2 choice The Family Man holds a great many parallels.  What’s really important – what makes life really rich – isn’t the “what” we have…it’s the “who” we have in our life – family and friends.  I think it’s ironic that the greatest trip and biggest discovery George ever makes happens right in Bedford Falls – the place he’s so eager to leave for great adventure.  George’s journey towards realizing just how successful he was is a trip I take as many times as I can over the Christmas holidays.

It’s a Wonderful Life is funny and moving, and watching it is a Christmas tradition for me.  Matter of fact my 3 ¾ year old little girl watched it with me for the first time this year and she told me she 'loves' it too.  Of course her favourite line – which she’s taken to saying whenever she can, comes courtesy of Violet (the town floozy) “why, this old thing – I only wear it when I don’t care how I look”…so maybe we’ve got a ways to go towards the real meaning – but the tradition carries on none the less.

Thanks for reading this long long long long long list…it’s been fun…long but fun!

Merry Christmas and all the best of the SEAson to ya! sb
