Time to be Aware…of this Man & his Book

November is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month – so both fortuitous and timely that SABS adds proud Nova Scotian - Dan Hennessey to the Cool People Profiles.  Dan has written a funny and touching book about a very serious subject entitled With the Snap of a Glove chronicling his 4 year battle with prostate cancer.

Dan shared these thoughts with us…

Prostate cancer is the number one cancer threat to men in Canada. It is far greater than commonly known, as 1 in 6, men are diagnosed each year, and this is expected to rise to 1 in 4 men within the next decade. As I am sure, you are aware, early detection is the key to beating prostate cancer, and that means men need to be having their annual physical check-ups with a Physician. Hence, the book title WITH THE SNAP OF A GLOVE. It was during my annual physical check-up that my doctor first became suspicious that I might have prostate cancer. This exam is what probably saved my life. A month later, I did indeed receive definite confirmation that I did have prostate cancer, and would require serious treatment, which included surgery and radiation therapy. It was a devastating day for me, my wife, and our children. I had no idea how to deal with his prostate cancer, and all the struggles I would entail in the next four years, but I knew that I would have the love and support of my family, as I embarked on this challenging battle for my life. I am thrilled to report that I am now cancer free and living a healthy life with my family.

The two main reasons I was motivated to write this book were to bring awareness to men to have their yearly prostate tests and exams. In addition, I found that because I was only 49 years old at his time of diagnosis, there was little reading material pertinent to my age group. Most of the literature focused on prostate cancer in elderly men. I found that many people viewed prostate cancer as being “an old man’s disease.” As this is definitely not the case, I decided he would chronicle my story, in hopes of providing some helpful literature for other men my age suffering from prostate cancer.

We salute you Dan for sharing your story and for beating the cancer too!!!  You are truly cool. SABS
