Dockside with Dean Brody

September 2010

It was a banner day – weather wise and as far as assignments go that’s for sure!  The sun was shimmering off the Atlantic in Chester, Nova Scotia and we were set to meet up with Country Artist Dean Brody.  BC born – he now has a place on the Southern Shore and so he chose the spot – The Rope Loft.  Very great place - so we pulled up a deck chair on their dock and talked about everything from getting up on stage to gummy worms...truth be told I could have stayed all day. I’m a fan of the fella what can I say.  So is the totally terrific Tara Oram NL - thanks Ms. O for letting us incorporate your video. SABS

Dean Brody with producer and friend Matt Rovey

One thing I did discover - both in listening to Dean’s music and hearing him talk about his Producer Matt Rovey – is that when it comes to the artist – the song writer, singer, musician – there might not be anyone who knows him better.  So – we tracked down Mr. Rovey and had him weigh in on this way cool dude Dean Brody. Here are his answers to our questions.  Thanks MR!!!

SABS: How would you describe Dean as an artist?

Matt Rovey: Dean is an artist in the true sense of the word. He's an "old soul" when it comes to writing. I am always amazed how he can write songs with such immense depth and honesty, even if it's not necessarily his own personal experience. Listen to "Cattleman's Gun", and you'd swear he was on that dusty road in the old west. And as a singer, I'm his biggest fan! His voice is so rich and honest that sometimes, like when we were working on the song "Trail in Life", it's hard to get through the song without losing it! To me, a great artist doesn't just sing well, but, more importantly, makes you believe it. I think we've just seen the tip of the iceberg from Dean artistically, which is a very exciting prospect!

SABS: If someone said describe "Trail in Life" in one sentence how would you do it?

Matt Rovey: "Trail in Life" is an incredibly vivid motion picture of real life set to music. I dare anyone to not find themselves somewhere in every one of these songs! I know that's two sentences- sorry 🙂

SABS: What was the best part of making this record?dean brody cover

Matt Rovey: The best part of making this record was twofold for me. First, Dean and I are such great friends that it's always fun just hanging out while we're working. We're both so busy all the time, that's when we get to spend the most time together! Also, when we're tracking, I love to watch the musician's faces when Dean plays the next song we're going to cut for the first time. These are some of the greatest musicians in the world, not easily impressed, and it's exciting to see them get so pumped up and pour all their creativity into it, because they know he's the real deal. It's infectious and makes everyone in the room rise to another level.
