Celebrating Spirits of the Kindred Kind

Can you believe it? Anne of Green Gables originally broadcast a quarter of century ago.  The Emmy Award winning made for TV mini-series starring Megan Follows, Colleen Dewhurst and Richard Farnsworth aired for the first time ever on December 1st, 1985 and it was magic!

“Montgomery’s characters are remarkably real and as such they give us rare insights into ourselves. They speak to all of us about the common experiences we share in growing up, sacrificing something of ourselves, falling in love, and growing old.”  Kevin Sullivan Executive producer, director & screen writer

It’s still magical really! I’ve always considered it to be one of those stars and planets aligning, perfectly captured moments in movie history.  Yes, Executive Producer, Director and Screen Writer Kevin Sullivan did have a classic in Lucy Maud Montgomery’s work, but that alone was no guarantee. The big and small screens are littered with books gone bad. And yes – he lucked out when it came to his spectacular backdrop of beautiful Prince Edward Island – but it took an incredible visual translation of a stellar script by spectacular cast to truly achieve that level of lasting greatness...you see...magic!

A cinematic achievement that was recognized by another group that’s celebrating 25 years in 2010... The ACCT (Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and other industry professionals).   Anne of Green Gables  swept the Gemini Awards in its inaugural year  - taking 10 of their 12 nominated categories - including Best Mini-Series, Best Supporting Actress for Dewhurst as Marilla Cuthbert, Best Supporting Actor for Farnsworth as Matthew Cuthbert and of course Best Lead Actress in Dramatic Program or Mini-Series went to Megan Follows for her beyond perfect performance as Anne (with an “e”) Shirley.  Music, costumes, photography, writing, production and art direction...win, win, win, win, and win!  It even took the award for Most Popular Program.

And two and a half decades later the popularity continues – for the original mini-series, its sequels and of course the literary gem.  With thousands of websites and blogs, hundreds of fan clubs, record merchandise sales, consistently high ratings and yearly pilgrimages to the legendary Green Gables...you don’t have to look too far to find a kindred spirit of Anne. Happy Anniversary!!! SABS
