Gordie Sampson – Making ‘Must Have’ Music

In this world of ipods and digital downloading – the subject of ‘desert island albums’ so very rarely comes up any more, (of course with the proliferation of cell phone service and the ever increasing world population, not to mention booming tropical island resort business – you’d be hard pressed to find yourself stranded anywhere anymore let alone on an desert island complete with a sound system – but I digress).  Were you to chat with a few people over 40 - they may recall having been asked the question – “If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one album – what would it be?”  Well I tell you all of this because – my ‘desert island album’ is Gordie Sampson’s Sunburn.  A fact that I shared with him a few years back during a telephone conversation – and while – yes it may have caused a palpable uneasiness between us...like one would have with someone they believe may or may not be a stalker...I’m glad I said it, because it’s a killer album.  And if you don’t already own a copy do yourself a favour and buy it.  I’m just sayin’.

This version of Sunburn was recorded live at the 2010 ECMA Awards Festival & Conference.  Gordie was hosting the SOCAN Songwriter’s Circle at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion.  Songwriter’s Circles are incredible, as the stories behind the songs are told – the inspiration, the heartbreak, the happy...it’s all there in the words of those who created it in the first place.  A must experience event for sure.  Keep writing the hits Gordie – I’ll keep loving you....from a distance SABS

Cuttin’ in on Country...

In addition to his songs being recorded by countless Atlantic Canadian Artists including Ashley MacIsaac (NS), Damhnait Doyle (NL) and Natalie MacMaster (NS) – Gordie Sampson’s is being credited for many a tune cut in Nashville – everyone from Faith Hill to Trace Adkins, Martina McBride, Bon Jovi and Keith Urban and of course Carrie Underwood who has turned to Gordie’s songs on more than one occasion after the mega hit “Jesus Take the Wheel” for which Sampson and his co-writers Brett James &  Hillary Lindsey scored a Grammy Award.

  1. Very nice clip, and I agree on Sunburn's potential as a desert island album. I never get sick of it.

  2. The most exciting thing about Gordie is the feeling we haven't seen his best yet.
