Come Gather and Listen – Stanfest

Posted: June 30, 2010

Music is woven throughout the fabric of life here in the Atlantic Provinces and many would argue it’s our greatest export.  Our artists have travelled the globe playing for audiences in small cafes and large stadiums, but we’re never happier when we can import fans to our homeland – be it festivals or clubs – there’s always great music to be enjoyed.   That’s just what Judith Weber has done – a few times now – when she has travelled from her home in Munich, Germany to the tiny town of Canso, Nova Scotia.  She’s been gracious enough to tell her story in hopes that you too will one day pull up a lawn chair and listen. The Music Never Stops… by Judith Webber

I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Stan Rogers Festival two times already.

People might say that Canso is at the end of nowhere – indeed it’s a remote place, but it’s such a lovely community with great and friendly people. For me the best place for the best festival.

The line-up is very variegated – artists from the Atlantic Provinces as well as artists from all over the world. The music is divided in six stages with different workshops all day long and in the evening everybody gets together at the main stage for the evening performances.

At the large campground or at the sea people gather until the morning dawning – the music never stops.  New friendships were made with other music lovers as well as with musicians.

The UK based duo “Breeze & Wilson, first met and discovered through Stanfest, even came to Germany for a visit and a gig in my hometown.

My favorite artists were: Dave Gunning, Gordie Sampson, Martyn Joseph, Bruce Guthro, Ron Hynes, JP Cormier and Sons Of Maxwell.

Don’t miss the workshop “Singing Stan” – a yearly tribute hour to Stan Rogers on Sunday afternoon – it’s the highlight of the festival.

I just love it and hope to be able to be there again next year.
