SEA AND BE SCENE….And HEARD Podcast Page

Hey everybody I’m Stephanie Beaumont...

Welcome to SEA AND BE SCENE ... And HEARD!

For eight years now I’ve been celebrating all the people places and things that make the 4 Atlantic Provinces so very special – here on website at seaandbescene.com and on SEA AND BE SCENE TV too..

I’m ever so grateful to the folks at COVE FM in beautiful Hubbards, Nova Scotia for giving me the chance to expand our EAST COAST Celebration to the wonderful world of radio.

Now with each broadcast I want to bring you closer to some of the amazing personalities that make up this corner of the world – they might be native to Nova Scotia or New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island or Newfoundland & Labrador – or they may be kindred spirits who simply adore living and working in Atlantic Canada . The only requirement here is that you raise your fun flag and wave it in salute of Canada’s Awesome East Coast.

Our chats will be just that – very conversational, not entirely sensible and with any luck totally enjoyable.

What follows are the downloadable podcasts along with show notes for your references.

AND... if by chance you're interested in sponsoring the show drop me a line [email protected] and we'll make it happen!!!

Ep.54 Jon Mullane - Broadcast Date October 10, 2018

I had a great time finally catching up to Halifax born, New Orleans based singer/songwriter and musician Jon Mullane. Oh we’d profiled Jon on the Sea And Be Scene.com many times over the past 8 years – covering his music and video releases and featuring him in our holiday features like favourite Christmas memories, Best Present Ever and New Year’s resolutions – but we had never met until just last week at HUMANI- T Cafe in Halifax... AND to be clear there are 2 Humani-T’s in the city. On the day we were to meet I was thrilled to have finally made it to an interview in advance of the guest... sadly I had arrived at the wrong Humani-T.... so I booted across town getting there over 30 minutes late, flustered and dying for a coffee – and Mr.Mullane could not have been more gracious. We got to talk about his latest CD release, his process for songwriting, his award winning documentary and so much more, including and his partnership with The Campaign to Change Direction, where he stands on ghosts and his plans for the future on Canada’s EAST Coast. So without further ado – here’s my conversation with the one and only Jon Mullane.

Ep.53 THE SONG AND THE SORROW - Millefiore Clarkes & Catherine MacLellan (Oct.3/18)

Today’s show was recorded a couple of weeks ago with a couple of guests who have been enjoying an award winning time of it following the release of their film dedicated to the memory and music of Gene MacLellan called THE SONG AND THE SORROW.

I connected with Juno winning sing/songwriter and star of THE SONG AND THE SORROW – Prince Edward Island’s own Catherine MacLellan on the phone just hours before a concert on the gentle isle and we’ll play that call coming up later in the show. I also sat down for a great chat with PEI filmmaker Millefiore Clarkes in Halifax on the eve of the world premiere of THE SONG AND THE SORROW at FIN The Atlantic International Film Festival were it took home the trophy for Best Atlantic Short Documentary. Of course we didn’t know that then, or just how much the FIN audiences would love it... oh sure I had been granted a screener so I had watched the film in advance of our interview and I knew it was awesome. One thing I didn’t know, however, was how to properly pronounce the film’s writer, editor and director’s name. I do now... it’s ‘Milla-fee-oree’ Clarkes. And I get it wrong for most of the interview and Ms.Clarkes Gentle Islander that she is doesn’t tell me until we’re nearly done... stay tuned for that awkward revelation – but other than that I’ve gotta say sitting down to chat with Millefiore was wonderful – naturally we talked about making THE SONG AND THE SORROW and so much more including – her search for love, her propensity for making great music videos and her plans for what’s next for her. So with all that ahead I say let’s get to it - here’s my conversation - amidst all the Atlantic International Film Festival hubbub - with the one and only Millefiore Clarkes (no matter how you hear me say it...)

For today’s show I’m taking you to Halifax where all the movie makers and industry shakers have been hunkered down since last Thursday – meeting, greeting, networking and of course screening their latest creations at FIN the Atlantic International Film Festival. That’s where I sat down with the writer and director of a very unique and mysterious new short screening at the film fest – PEI born, Nova Scotia based Jackie Torrens will see her documentary short BERNIE LANGILLE WANTS TO KNOW WHO KILLED BERNIE LANGILLE play as part of the Atlantic Shorts Program – so we’ll talk about this very cool film and so much more – including her award winning turns on screen, her award winning work on radio and what she’ll be creating next, plus we’ll talk Hamlet, haunted houses and where she stands on Willem Dafoe. With all that ahead I say lets get to it! Here’s my conversation with the one and only – Jackie Torrens.

Ep.51 The HOPELESS ROMANTIC Special - Broadcast Date September 13, 2018

'Awesome' is always the word for THE ATLANTIC INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL – movie makers, industry folk and film lovers alike descend upon Halifax to meet, greet, make connections, do deals and above screen pictures – from romance to drama, comedy to classics, creepy horror to moving documentaries – every genre you can imagine - from riveting shorts to full length features – from all around the world and of course right here at home and that brings us to today’s episode where we’ll be shining the spotlight on HOPELESS ROMANTIC.  A film that will make its world premiere at a FIN Saturday September 15th – and just like the film itself – we’ll bring together all kinds of talented East Coast Folks and Kindred Spirits to tell the story of this truly cool rom/com.

Now HOPELESS ROMANTIC is made up of a collection of stories all by different writers.  "The anthology feature film focuses on 50-something Anna, as she helps six different women navigate through relationships across an epic landscape of partners, emotions, risks and payoffs only to learn that, like most adventures, it’s absolutely not about the destination."

So yes it’s a cool approach to a romantic comedy, but what makes this project so special – is that each of the films six stories is directed by a different female director. Nova Scotia’s Megan Wennberg and Stephanie Clattenburg joined forces with Newfoundland directors are Deanne Foley Ruth Lawrence, Martine Blue and Latonia Hartery - each woman putting her own unique touch into weaving this true tapestry of a film.

Our HOPELESS ROMANTIC guest list today includes Producer Bill Niven, Writer/Director Deanne Foley, Writer/Director Ruth Lawrence, Producer/Director Latonia Hartery, and the film’s star Lynda Boyd. We’ll also catch up with FIN’s Executive Director Wayne Carter to chat about what’s in-store for this year’s festival.

Ep.50 Deanne Foley - Broadcast Date September 5, 2018

I’ve gotta say it’s always awesome to talk with filmmaker Deanne Foley, and the St.John’s native has given us plenty to report on over the years.... from her first feature back in 2012 which she co-wrote and directed BEAT DOWN an irreverent comedy about wrestling, family and following your dreams no matter how painful that can sometimes be. To her 2014 romantic comedy RELATIVE HAPPINESS about a plus sized and feisty Bed and Breakfast owner who desperately needs a date to her sisters wedding. To her time directing episodes of REPUBLIC OF DOYLE and now her latest efforts as one of 6 directors on the rom-com HOPELESS ROMANTIC about a 50 something lady who helps 6 different women navigate through relationships across an epic landscape of partners, emotions, risks and payoffs and as the director of the moving drama AN AUDIENCE OF CHAIRS with its unflinching look at this woman's struggle with mental illness and her struggle to put her life back together. both of which will be celebrated with a gala screening at next week’s FIN ATLANTIC INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL. Now that’s a ton to talk about – so we’ll save all of our HOPELESS ROMANTIC discussion for a special ensemble episode to air next week. And we’ll concentrate on Deanne’s solo effort AN AUDIENCE OF CHAIRS in this show plus we’ll talk about how she got started in the business, how she felt about filming right here in Hubbards and a whole lot more including casting, comradery and of course destiny. With 2 films screening at fin Ms.Foley is flat out so we were thrilled to catch up with her on the move in the homeland – so without further ado here’s my conversation with Newfoundland’s own DEANNE FOLEY...

Ep. 49 Allan Reid & David Hayman - Broadcast Date August 22, 2018

These interviews were recorded during EAST COAST MUSIC WEEK 2018 in Halifax Nova Scotia

First up my interview with President & CEO of CARAS/The JUNO Awards & MusiCounts Mr. ALLAN REID – he also happens to be Kim Stockwood’s husband and while I have run into him at the CCMA’s and ECMA’s before I’ve never had the chance to nab him for a chat with him on air. I found him waiting for a colleague in the Marriott Hotel’s lobby restaurant – it’s not often you’re invited for a sit down with the President and CEO of The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences – but that didn’t stop me and fortunately for Mr. Reid was a really sweet sport!

I also have a great conversation with DAVID HAYMAN – The Creative Director and Lead Music Supervisor at THE SUPERGROUP! A Toronto based company of vastly experienced and award-winning, Music Supervisors, Song Curators and Music Industry Insiders, who have experience in advertising, film, television, Virtual reality and Integrated Branded Content Global Advertising Campaigns. As a BIG fan of his Music Supercast podcast I was totally thrilled to hear Mr.Hayman was heading to Halifax to speak at this year’s ECMA’s and over the moon when he agreed to sit down for chat.

Well not only did I have a great time chatting with today’s guests but I have so loved working with both of them for the past few months. Erin Lowe and Sarah Taylor are both on the Tourism Chester team with me which means we’ve been going full tilt boogie since the summer began getting the word out about all the amazing things there are to see and do in the municipality of Chester so we’ll talk about those efforts including what it’s like to always be on the move with our mobile kiosk when we talk to Sarah Taylor later in the show, our great Tourism Ambassador progam, our brand new websites and so much more – there sure is a lot of ground to cover so without further ado here’s my conversation with the Municipality of Chester’s own Erin Lowe. // I’m so glad you’ve tuned for this edition as we’re getting the scoop on Tourism Chester – With SEA AND BE SCENE's world wide headquarters being located in the Village of Chester we were so excited to see a fresh new approach to tourism being taken by the municipality and i was ever so thrilled to be a part of the program development and launch. A key element of that program is the Mobile kiosk and our superstar Mobile Ambassador SARAH TAYLOR who heads out every day to meet and greet tourists and locals alike Sarah’s a huge part of the Tourism Chester team to be sure of it! Matter of fact - when it comes to being a star team player - Ms.Taylor brings a ton of experience to the job. Having just graduated from Boise State with a degree in Heath Sciences and Pre-Med, the Nova Scotia native was also there to play for their Women's Soccer Team. Sarah continues to play now that she's back home, in addition to hosting some great skills workshops too! But today Sarah’s out and about and we’re catching up to her on the move so we caught up to her in the action.

Totally enjoyable was unquestionably the case when I connected with award winning musician, actor, writer, producer, director, composer and totally cool kindred spirit - Raoul Bhaneja - who was in Nova Scotia this past week to film a guest spot on season 2 of PURE.

With the number of his on screen credits well into the 90’s, he’s a familiar face on TV and in movies to be sure of it - with roles in everything from THE RON JAMES, Little Mosque on the Prairie and Best Laid Plans to guest spots on REPUBLIC OF DOYLE MURDOCH MYSTERIES THE LISTENER and so many more – plus big screen turns in films like THE SENTINAL with Michael Douglas and MISS SLOANE with Jessica Chastain. Ep.42 Mike Campbell - Broadcast Date June 20, 2018

Our chats will be just that very conversational, not entirely sensible and with any luck totally enjoyable...that was certainly the case when I stopped into Halifax’s mega award winning music venue and restaurant The Carleton last week to sit down for a catch up with the venue’s original owner and programming director Mike Campbell. Yes – THE Mike Campbell of MUCH MUSIC hits like MUCHeast, GOING COASTAL and of course MIKE & MIKE’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE. These days Mike is celebrating a decade of playing host to some of the biggest and coolest musical acts on the scene. AND enjoying the fresh new look to the historic spot on Argyle – built back in 1760 – the stellar musical venue is staffed with a great new team to take it into the next exciting chapter so we’ll talk about that and so much more including the amazing artists who’ve graced the stage, Mike’s much revered ear for hearing talent, his take on destiny and we’ll even break some news about the line up for his Halifax Urban Folk Festival (aka HUFF) – so without further ado – here’s my conversation with the one and only Mike Campbell...

Ep.38 Jan Miller - Broadcast Date May 16/18

What a lovely time I had sitting down for a chat with Jan Miller – if you’re business is film and television that’s a familiar name for sure – but Ms.Miller’s magic begins long before what you and I see on the big and small screens.  As the architect of international co-pro market Strategic Partners and Trans Atlantic Partners, the driving force behind Canada's first film school, the National Screen Institute, and the founder of Women in Film and Television-Atlantic she’s had a hand in countless productions. Now as you might imagine – with that kind of resume – the lady never stops – in fact at this very moment she’s in France working the 71st Annual Cannes Film Festival – but a week or so ago Jan invited me to her spectacular spot near Peggy's Cove with a jaw dropping backdrop on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.  Now for the record, it was a stormy day so you’ll every now and again you’ll hear the winds whistle and occasionally her dog Charlot breathing into the mic but you may not even notice it amidst the whirl wind of her wonderful works we’ll discuss and there’s plenty – so without further ado here’s my conversation with the one and only Jan Miller.

Ep.37 Steve Poltz - Broadcast Date May 9/18

I knew I was in for the treat of all treats sitting down for the first time with with Halifax born/Nashville based, world renowned singer-songwriter Steve Poltz. We met at one of Steve’s favourite spots to play – mega ECMA Award winning club The Carleton just prior to the first of his 2 sold out shows that mark the start of his tour through the Maritimes. Now if you’re familiar with his music you’ll know Mr.Poltz puts it all out there in his songs so I was certain this hour would fly by with the fun of it and man did it ever. We talked about everything from first kisses to favourite movies to his feelings on destiny - we even talked about writing a tune together – the inspiration for which you’ll hear in a bit along with the 3 songs of his Steve would put in a time capsule and some of my favourites too. It’s an entertaining hour to be sure of it – so without further ado – here’s the one and only Steve Poltz

Now close to a hundred roles on the stage and screen we would have needed a week to get it all said so we’ve narrowed it down to her recent TV roles in shows like HAVEN and FORGIVE ME – big screen work in CAST NO SHADOW and the forth coming SPLINTERS and her new play HALF-CRACKED: THE LEGEND OF SUGAR MARY which is on stage now at Neptune Theatre, and we’ll squeeze in as many other productions as we can – plus learn about her hometown of Antigonish, get the scoop on some of her famous friends and co-stars, discover her process for choosing a role and we’ll even play a long overdue round of INsights IN 10. Indeed there’s plenty of ground to cover so let’s get to it! Here’s my conversation with Nova Scotia’s own Mary-Colin Chisholm.

Ep.30 Greg Hawco - Broadcast Date: March 14/18

I first met this NL fella back in 2014 during a benefit concert for the Company Theatre – but we’d been celebrating the talents of Greg Hawco long before then on SeaAndBeScene.com. The wonderfully talented conductor and composer was already in our Cool People Profiles and we were enjoying his musical contributions to one of our favourite shows – REPUBLIC OF DOYLEGreg was even kind enough to share an amazing photo album feature from his trip to Berlin with us. So naturally when we caught up to him at the company theatre for SEA AND BE SCENE TV -we were keen to get the scoop.  Greg’s been busy with the baton ever since – having conducted both here and overseas many times – in fact he’s formed an awesome new orchestra with a big concert planned for this summer so we’ll get the scoop on that – plus we’ll chat about the killer new music he’s made for CBC’s new series CAUGHT and we’ll talk about his role with the Toronto Company for the Broadway smash COME FROM AWAY and a whole lot more. As you might imagine his new theatre role keeps him close to the stage so we’re catching up to him in TO via telephone - here's my conversation with the one and only Greg Hawco

Ep.29 Joel Thomas Hynes - Broadcast Date: March 7/18

It was a real treat connecting with today’s guest and here’s why - he’s an honest to goodness renaissance man. He is a novelist, a singer, a songwriter, a musician, an actor, a screenwriter – and on the list goes. He’s also very funny as evidence by his latest series LITTLE DOG – and now that I know what to expect when we connect – I’m not afraid, but for the sake of full transparency – back when I first interviewed Joel Thomas Hynes at the 2014 Atlantic International Film Festival I was... well... nervous. And truthfully that had everything to do with his great acting skills – from his guest starring stint as dark and scary Taylor Gossad on REPUBLIC OF DOYLE to his darker and scary turn as Angus in CAST NO SHADOW- buddy had me more than worried but there was nothing to worry about. Our chat back then was a great one and we’ll have more on his award winning feature CAST NO SHADOW coming up in a bit, and we’ll hear from his award winning cos-star too. But we’ve got plenty of new ground to cover with this constantly creating NL fella - from his most recent novel "We'll All Be Burnt in Our Beds Some Night," to music from his brand new album DEAD MAN’S MELODY (all 9 tracks written by Joel Thomas Hynes), to his just premiered comedy series for CBC called LITTLE DOGJoel created the show which was shot in Newfoundland – and we’ll get the scoop on all of that including production and cast.  And speaking of cast – we’ll catch up to a brilliant member of the LITTLE DOG family – wonderful Irish born actress Ger Ryan who plays Tommy’s oh so passive-aggressive mother Sylvia. We’ll even play a long overdue round of INsight IN 10 with the man – it’s a jam packed show so let’s get to it. Enjoy my telephone conversation with the one and only Joel Thomas Hynes...

Ep.28 Allan Hawco - Broadcast Date: Feb.21/18

My first interview with today’s guest was in the backseat of a GTO.... wait a second now - it's not that kind of radio show – this was way back in 2010 – I had just launched SEA AND BE SCENE and somehow managed to score an interview with TV’s hottest new detective. They were in Newfoundland filming an episode on location and lucky for me it was pouring rain, and the only dry spot not in use was in Jake Doyle’s car. Talk about timing! And ever since that very first chat Mr.Allan Hawco has given us a ton of projects to cover – from the six seasons of REPUBLIC OF DOYLE to his mini series THE BOOK OF NEGROES to his work on the big screen in films like WEIRDOS, HYENA ROAD and LOVE AND SAVAGERY to his stage productions with his Toronto based Company Theatre, to his St.John’s based production company Take The Shot and on and on the list goes.  In fact right now his horror movie THE CHILD REMAINS is running the North American festival circuit – his period drama FRONTIER for Discovery Channel and Netflix is currently filming season 3 in Newfoundland and he’s just days away from the premiere of a brand new series for CBC – one for which he holds the title of showrunner, executive producer, co-writer and star – that show is CAUGHT!  Adapted from NL author Lisa Moore’s acclaimed novel of the same name – Hawco plays David Slaney who’s "locked up after a drug bust and makes a daring escape from a New Brunswick prison to attempt one more drug deal with his former partner. It’s Slaney’s last chance at freedom but in this tale of bravado and betrayal, nothing is what it seems and no one can be trusted." Paul Gross, Tori Anderson and Eric Johnson are just a few of Allan’s talented co-stars and we’ll get the scoop on casting for CAUGHT and some cool inside scoop on that show - and so much more including his methods for acting, his ability for multi-tasking and his wonderful family. Plus we play an insightful round of WOULD YOU RATHER and cover a great deal of creative ground – he’s my conversation with the one and only Allan Hawco.

Ep.27 Jim Cuddy - Broadcast Date Feb.14/18

It’s always an extraordinary pleasure interviewing today’s guest – in fact I have on two previous occasions.  Once back in 2006 when I was working at TV station in Ottawa and he was in town to promote his sophomore solo release, and the second time was just this past September at the Canadian Country Music Awards in Saskatoon. So you can imagine how wonderful it is to report our third and longest chat would be right here in Nova Scotia - just one show into his nation wide tour. Now for the sake of full transparency – I am a HUGE fan of the man and in a lot of ways his music has been the soundtrack to my life – both his solo work and that of his band... and I know I’m not alone in that LOVE.  His list of accomplishments is endless - from his countless SOCAN and JUNO awards, to his place in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, to his induction into the Order of Canada - Jim Cuddy is a legend to be sure of it.   How awesome that the Blue Rodeo front man sat down for a great chat before his solo CONSTELLATION Tour took to the stage at the Rebecca Cohen Theatre in Halifax - and we talked about everything - from the inspiration behind his music to his early days with the band, from his take on destiny to his feelings on throw pillows and so much more.  We play a brand new game and of course we’ll play some of his amazing music. I couldn’t have asked for a more lovely ♥VALENTINE’S DAY♥ Edition OF SEA AND BE SCENE AND HEARD...

Ep.26 Shawn Doyle - Broadcast Date Feb.7/18

I first met today’s phenomenal guest back in 2011 - just a wee bit south of here in fact, in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia where the Labrador born, Toronto based actor was busy shooting the feature film THE DISAPPEARED, and truth be told our coverage has been non stop since. Just do a search on Sea And Be Scene and you’ll see we’ve celebrated his work on the big and small screen with roles in everything from hits like FARGO and HOUSE OF CARDS, to his award winning mini series JOHN A. BIRTH OF A NATION, to his most recent film AWAY FROM EVERYWHERE, and then there’s his currently running shows BELLEVUE, FRONTIER and THE EXPANSE, and a whole lot more - but that’s just for the past 7 years!  You’d have really need to check out his IMDb page to get the full roster of roles – from guest starring on Emmy winning shows like DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and LOST, to regular roles like on HBO’s smash BIG LOVE to starring turns in shows like END GAME, to movies like GROWN UP MOVIE STAR and FREQUENCY there’s a ton of it to say the least, and then there’s his stage work.  Yes, it’s fair to say buddy’s been busy, but truth be told it’s his great talents as an actor that keep him in such great demand – so we’ll do our best to cover it all, plus get the scoop on his life in Labrador, his love of baths and a whole lot more! Ep.25 Krystin Pellerin - Broadcast Date Jan.31/18

I first met today’s wonderful guest in St.John’s – she was taking a break from filming a new detective series for CBC and I had just launched SEA AND BE SCENE – it was all early days little did we know the world wide hit we were talking about – REPUBLIC OF DOYLE went on to air for 6 seasons – to millions of people around planet – and to this day as it screens on Netflix in the US and the UK more and more folks are delighting in Doyle and the talents of it’s female lead Krystin Pellerin. Over the years we’ve had plenty of on set chats and red carpet conversations to discuss the Krystin’s on screen work and here on the site we had the exclusive on her theatre world with THE PELLERIN POST in which Krystin had shared her on her many stage productions so it’s fair to say we are HUGE fans of this multi-talented and award winning lady. Since DOYLE’s wrap Krystin went on to stage in the emotional short TOUCH which has garnered tons of accolades and awards on the festival circuit so we’ll be sure to talk about that as well as her recent work on the Stratford stage as none other than Lady Macbeth – a far cry character wise from Sgt. Leslie Bennett – but if we’ve learned anything about Ms.Pellerin over the years it’s that her talents no no limits. And did we mention she can sing – these days she's busy belting out Broadway hits – as Atlantic Light Theatre presents GUYS AND DOLLS – February 1 through the 4th.  As you might imagine we’ve got plenty of ground to cover to let’s get to it – here’s my conversation with the award winning and wonderful Krystin Pellerin.

I kinda feel bad about saying HOOK didn’t do well – it really did have everything going for it – great cast Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, Julia Roberts, Bob Hoskins - directed by Steven Spielberg – and after an estimated cost of $70+ million it has grossed over $300million to date BUT it was panned by the critics and that did hurt sales at the box office.  So "Didn't do well" is a relative term. Ep.23 Dawn Chafe & Alan Doyle - Broadcast Date Jan. 17/18

I always love chatting with today’s guests – both natives of Newfoundland & Labrador – both award winning in their field. Coming up later in the show – I’ll share a quick catch up with the pride of Petty Harbour – Mr.Alan Doyle who's always on the go.  In fact the man just kicked off another North American tour this week – and  between promoting his new book and performing he’s been producing a ton to boot. He's never too busy for a chat though. Check out the links below for everything from one on one interviews to a very hilarious round of INsights IN 10 – from backstage to behind the scenes to the red carpet and the green carpet too! In fact that’s where we last crossed paths in Saskatoon just before the Canadian Country Music Awards. First we’ll connect to school mate of Mr.Doyle’s who I call Madame Editor – she is in fact the Executive Editor of Atlantic Business Magazine - the longest publishing regional business magazine in Atlantic Canada as well as the most award-winning and largest circulation business magazine in the region. As you might imagine it’s a massive endeavour and we’ll talk about her role with ABM and so much more - including her feelings on 'fake news' and her favourite to- dos when you’re in her home province, and her sage advice for upcoming journalists. Ep.22 Jana Stackhouse & Kurt Stoodley - Broadcast Date Jan. 10/18

For today’s show we take to the phones for 2 great calls! First - a quick catch up call with award winning, New Brunswick born filmmaker Jana Stackhouse. I got word that her latest short AWAY HOME has been selected for a very cool film festival hosted by TIFF - Canada's Top Ten Film Festival. Jana’s been on the go with her work and busy these days so she promised to come back for the full hour another time – just enough time today to get the scoop on her movie and this weekend’s big festival.

Then another fun phone call with my dear friend and former co-host Kurt Stoodley. The award winning broadcaster is certainly a familiar face on Canada’s East Coast – a native of Newfoundland where he worked in radio and TV, but most remembered for the the 5 years during which Atlantic Canada woke up every morning with the man.  That's when he served as co-host on ATV’s BREAKFAST TELEVISION.  We’ll get the scoop on his 3 plus decade long career and so much more – from his love of live TV to his love of hockey – his advice to anyone hoping to follow in his footsteps to his tips for taking in the nation's capital - which is exactly where we reached him when we called.  Please enjoy my conversation with the one and only Kurt Stoodley.

Show Notes - For the purposes of links, omissions and clarifications

If you're in the Toronto area make plans to see AWAY HOME Saturday, January 13th at 2:30pm when it screens as part of TIFF's Canada's Top Ten Film Festival! Jana will be there to introduce her film and answer questions as well.  For tickets and additional information click here.

Ep.21 Lisa Brokop & John Dunsworth - Broadcast Date Jan.3,2018

With the New Year upon us – I wanted to take care of a few things undone things before we head full on into 2018.

First up - I want to share my chat with Award Winning Country Recording Artist Lisa Brokop – it was recorded back in September - out in Saskatoon at the tail end of Canadian Country Music Week. The BC born singer/songwriter first burst onto the scene as a teen a back in the 90’s and she’s been busy ever since. While our paths did crossed a lot back in the day – it’s been a while to say the least so it sure was lovely to sit and catch up over coffee just prior to her return to Nashville.

As well - just this past October we lost a legend here on Canada’s EAST Coast – and although his talents were celebrated around the world we proudly claim Mr.John Dunsworth as an incredible Nova Scotian. Ask anyone and they’ll tell ya - the Award Winning actor was a life force – winning over audiences on the big and small screens and on stage as well – always on the go – always up for a chat so in the second half of the show – I’d like to share a very lovely conversation I had with Mr.Dunsworth back in 2013 – when his series HAVEN was shooting right here in Hubbards. By the time the ON SET SPECIAL aired and I included my interviews with the rest of the cast only about 4 minutes of that my time with John made it to the broadcast – so today as a tribute I’ll let you hear all the fun we had – so please stay tuned for that.

Ep.20 Jonathan Torrens - Broadcast Date Dec.20,2017

What a treat it was catching up to today’s guest – he is hands down the best! Ask anyone and they’ll tell ya PEI born, Nova Scotia based award winning actor Jonathan Torrens is the finest kind of fella and these days he’s certainly one of the busiest. Having just added author to his ever growing list of accomplishments – he was in the midst of a cross country book tour with his CANADIANITY co-author and Taggart and Torrens Podcast co-host former Our lady Peace drummer Jeremy Taggart. Lucky for me Jonathan was off the road for the weekend and so we met at a not so quiet coffee shop in Truro, Nova Scotia. The hub of Nova Scotia, the home of his long time gig TRAILER PARK BOYS and not too far from his country home. Hard to cover it all of in an hour but we’ll chat about everything from his work on TV, to his best selling book, his lovely family to his growing legions of bahds – we’ll talk Christmas and about his plans for the future and so much more – here’s my conversation with the remarkable Jonathan Torrens.

Show Notes - For the purposes of links, omissions and clarifications

Thanks and sorry to Jeremy Taggart for allowing me to ruin the cool picture above with your co-host.  I was supposed to take a selfie when Jonathan and I met up but in all the excitement I forgot.  You can see what the picture really looks like by clicking here.

Ep.19 Susan Kent - Broadcast Date Dec. 13, 2017

(Bonus guests: Shaun Majumder & Jonny Harris)

Today’s show comes complete with a cornucopia of comedy – 3 funny folks who not only hail from the province of Newfoundland & Labrador but who also star in the HATCHING, MATCHING AND DISPATCHING Holiday Special A CHRISTMAS FURY.

Just a few days before the December 3rd premier I popped by the Dartmouth home of Susan Kent to get the full scoop on this amazing reunion of the Fury family – from the top shelf team of talent to first call from the show’s creator Mary Walsh and all kinds of wonderful stuff in between – of course Susan plays Mary’s daughter Darlene in A CHRISTMAS FURY and we’ll have that conversation coming up later in the show.

We’ll also dive into our SEA AND BE SCENE TV archives for a special road trip edition of Insights IN 10 with Corner Brook Comedian Jonny Harris who stars as the always in some type of trouble Troy Fury, and we’ll flashback for our visit to the Halifax, Nova Scotia set of THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES for an interview with Burlington Newfoundland native Shaun Majumder – Shawn just resumed his role as the dim- witted grave digger Cyril in A CHRISTMAS FURY - we talked to him about everything from his hilarious homeland to his mega award winning show so stay tuned for that.

But we'll kick off the show with that time we caught up to Ms. Susan Kent - on the 22 MINUTES set – the show had just received the truly prestigious Icon Award from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television for 23 years of delivering that laughs week after week. We’ll discuss that honour and how she came to be a part of this stellar team.

I was so happy when the award winning and wonderful young filmmaker and actress Koumbie popped into the cove fm studios for a chat. I so enjoyed meeting today’s guest way back when SEA AND BE SCENE had just launched and we were both booked to be a part of the broadcast team for the Christmas Daddies telethon in Cape Breton.  Of course Janice Landry was familiar face to CTV viewers long before then – as reporter and anchor who would go on to helm her own production company and author three books with a fourth set for release this month. Ask anyone who’s lucky enough to cross her path and they’ll tell you she is a force – excelling at all that she sets her mind to do and that as you’ll soon hear that's a tremendous amount. It’s always a great time hanging out with today’s guest - I should know - I’ve been doing it for the past 4 plus decades or so.  You see not only is he an incredibly talented songwriter, producer, engineer, multi-instrumentalist and artist manager – I’m proud to say Dan Swinimer is my cousin. My father Jack and Dan’s dad Bill grew up in Gold River, Nova Scotia, so even though he’s based on the west coast now - his EAST Coast roots run deep. There’s no denying his impact on the Canadian Country Music Scene has gone nation wide – and his work and touring schedule is full-tilt busy. Fortunately for me, a radio tour for his artist JoJo Mason has brought him to Halifax allowing for a quick trip down the shore to see the family and pop by my kitchen for a coffee - creaky chairs and all. We’ll talk about his award winning roster, his hit songwriting and how the industry has changed over the years since he started in the biz, we’ll talk about destiny and moonshine and so much more... here’s my conversation with Manicdown Music founder, president and chief creative officer Dan Swinimer.

ps - Just to be clear (before you judge me unfairly) I have nothing against subtitled movies - it's just so rarely I actually sit and only watch a movie - usually my viewing happens at 3am on Netflix while I'm folding laundry etc. so I don't often have the screen focus required for subtitles... I do however look forward to such a luxury before too long.

Ep. 9 - JASON BARRY Airdate Sept.27,2017

Just a few weeks ago I was in Saskatoon for Canadian Country Music Week, to shoot a special at the CCMA Awards, and to catch up with old colleagues and new country artists. Lucky for me I had a chance to sit down for a chat with a great friend who just happens to be a mega award winning musician, producer, songwriter and studio owner.  He’s also a native of Newcastle, New Brunswick and one of the sweetest guys I know. Now, I should tell you quiet spots during CCMA week are few and far between – so you just might hear some hustle and bustle in the background and a hiccup or two in my portable studio system but you’re guaranteed to be amazed at what this guy's got on the go!  Here’s my conversation with Jason Barry....

EP. 8 - MEAGHAN SMITH Airdate Sept.20,2017

You know how I always warn "our chats will be very conversational, not entirely sensible and with any luck totally enjoyable."

Well enjoyable may not go far enough for today’s guest. All I know is the hour sure flew by when Juno award winning singer/songwriter Meaghan Smith dropped by the station. The Ontario born, Nova Scotia based artist is in the midst of a wonderful new project – called OUR SONG. We talked about that and so much more like all the lovely twists and turns her career path has taken – we talked about juggling life and whether or not there are ghosts, we played "INsights IN 10" and of course we played some of her incredible music too. Here is my conversation with Meaghan Smith...

The version of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE that Meaghan loves with Colin Firth as Mr.Darcy was actually a 6 part mini-series back in 1995.  The lead actress in the role of Elizabeth Bennet was Jennifer Ehle - and it turns out she's not British at all just really great at the accent.  Ms.Ehle hails from Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
