Tom Cochrane – At Home Here in Newfoundland & Labrador

Occupation: Photographer and filmmaker

Place of Birth: Pasadena, NL

Currently Resides: Corner Brook, NL, except Woody Point, NL during the summer

Where’s your favourite place in Newfoundland & Labrador to grab a coffee?

Galliott Studios in Woody Point. Best kind of people, incredible art on the walls, and a patio that is actually a wharf that stretches out over the ocean. Sometimes you can see whales! Coming in at a close second is definitely Brewed Awakening in Corner Brook.

Where’s your favourite place in Newfoundland & Labrador to grab a pint?

There’s a brand new brewpub in Corner Brook called Bootleg Brewery and it’s SO GOOD. Amazing local beer and great atmosphere. The Royal Canadian Legion in Woody Point comes in at second.

Where’s your favourite place in Newfoundland & Labrador to grab a bite to eat?

Newfound Sushi in Corner Brook. Easily the best sushi in Canada, often made with amazing local fish!

Where’s your favourite place to shop in Newfoundland & Labrador?

At any artists studio or gallery. The number of amazing artists throughout this province is mind blowing.

Where in Newfoundland & Labrador would we stand to see your favourite view?

At the end of the Eastern Point trail in Trout River. I’ve watched too many incredible sunsets there to even begin to count.

Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit Newfoundland & Labrador:

1. Visit Gros Morne National Park. You could easily spend a week here and not have enough time to see all the incredible views. PLUS it’s full of amazing music and theatre.

2. Go to Bottle Cove. Located about 45 minutes west of Corner Brook, this tiny little cove is easy to access, but after a very short (20 min) hike you can feel like you’re on the edge of the world.

3. Drink as much local beer and coffee as you can. The local coffee scene is strong and the local beer scene is *just* starting to take off.

What makes Newfoundland & Labrador such a special place on earth for you?

It’s home and it’s beautiful. The people, the landscape, the culture, all of it comes together to create true magic. Being here just *feels* better than anywhere else in the world, you know? It’s impossible to describe that feeling, other than to encourage you to come here and explore it for yourself!
