Canada, It’s Complicated

A Sweet Release...

Canada, It’s Complicated announces national Mary Walsh production blends theatre, technology, and mentorship as it travels across the country

Canada, It's Complicated – an innovative new production by Mary Walsh (This Hour Has 22 Minutes, CODCO) – embarks on a national tour this fall, traveling to every Canadian province and territory.

Featuring sketches and satirical songs that examine the joys, foibles, tragedies, and triumphs of Canada as it is today and into the future, the show was written by some of the country’s leading comedians, musicians, and playwrights. It stars a diverse cast of young, up-and-coming performers representing a variety of diverse cultural backgrounds.

Evolving in real time to incorporate filmed performances and interviews shot in each region with local residents, Canada, It’s Complicated combines an original soundscape with a unique multimedia stage experience.

This multimedia approach also follows the production to schools around the country where – following a free show – students will participate in comedy workshops and be encouraged to present their own version of a Canada, It’s Complicated show to their peers. Their work will then be posted online to form a digital collection representing their shared experience of being Canadian in 2017, creating an online legacy that will be featured on multiple social media platforms.

An All-Star Team for Canada, It’s Complicated

With acclaimed writer, director, and actor, and author of the current best-seller Crying for the Moon, Mary Walsh at the helm, Canada, It’s Complicated was written in collaboration with all-star Canadian comedians, musicians, and playwrights. They include Derek Seguin of Montreal (2015 Sirius Top Comic), Tiffany Ayalik and Greyson Gritt of Quantum Tangle (2017 JUNO Award-winning music duo from Yellowknife, NT), Marie Clements (award-winning Métis playwright, performer, director, producer, screenwriter, BC), Thomas King (Governor General Award winner, novelist, and creator of CBC Radio's Dead Dog Café), Mieko Ouchi (award-winning actor, director and playwright, AB), Mike Allison (award-winning lead writer for This Hour has 22 Minutes, NS), Scott Montgomery (actor, producer, and writer, AB), and Trent McClellan (comedian, current cast member of This Hour Has 22 Minutes, ON).

The multimedia design for Canada, It’s Complicated has been created by Felix Fradet-Faguy and Normal Studio of Montreal. Fradet-Faguy works regularly with Normal as well as with Ex Machina, Canadian playwright Robert Lepage’s production company. Most recently with Ex Machina, Fradet-Faguy designed the images for Lepage’s acclaimed 2016 theatre production 887, winning the 2017 Toronto Theatre Critics award for Best Design.

"I am thrilled to be working on such an exciting project with some of the best writers and designers in the country," says Mary Walsh. "We have created a show that will travel across Canada; east, west, north, south, and to rural and urban communities, showcasing emerging comedic, musical, and theatrical talents using multimedia and cutting edge technologies, to take a comedic look at Canada today, 150 years into this confederation."
