Every Christmas, for more than a decade now, my Aunt Elaine has given me the same gift. The same - only different.
Indeed, every year I look forward to receiving that burgundy envelope - the one that holds the Amos Pewter ornament of the year. It's a tradition to be sure of it, and one that so many have come to treasure since the Nova Scotia based store and workshop was opened in Mahone Bay back in 1974. In fact faithful customers have the ornaments shipped all over the globe as gifts, naturally building their own personal collections along with it.
No visit to Mahone Bay is complete without a stop in at Amos Pewter. Once a boat building shop constructed in 1888, the lovely store on the water now showcases Amos Pewter's world renowned hand crafted jewelry, ornaments, home decor and tableware - the designs for which are inspired by their beautiful seaside surroundings and nature itself.
When you visit the store you'll also see their workshop, complete with casting demonstrations where their artisans will show you how they cast molten pewter. Watching them work and seeing their creations you'll soon discover why Amos Pewter is synonymous with excellence in design and craftsmanship.
And that excellence continues with the 2016 Ornament of the Year - The Cardinal and here is the message it brings...
"There is no better time to catch sight of a cardinal than in the winter, when his brilliant red plumage contrasts with the brightness of freshly fallen snow. The more vibrant his crimson colouring, the more likely he will find a lifelong mate who can join him in singing rich, cheerful duets to bring sunshine even on the coldest and darkest of winter days. We all have unique qualities to celebrate. Stand out and stand proud. Make the world a brighter place."
I so look forward to adding the lovely Cardinal to my keepsake collection that - this year - has officially grown to needing its own tree. Each beautiful ornament tells a story, marks a milestone and means the world to me. I'm so very grateful for my Aunt Elaine's thoughtful gift each year and I'll treasure my collection for every year to come. sb
Along with Mahone Bay, Amos Pewter also has locations in Halifax and Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia and Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
