Posted: May 9, 2016

As far as bittersweet posts go... this one ranks pretty close to the top.

If you were tuned in to CANADA AM on Friday morning (05/06/16) then you've heard the news... the bad and the good.

The 'bad' news - after his 18 year run on the national talk show and a 40 year career - Jeff Hutcheson will retire from broadcasting.

The 'good' news - he'll be making one last tour across Canada before he officially signs off at the end of June...

... that will include 3 broadcast stops here in Atlantic Canada - one in Quidi Vidi NL, another in Lunenburg NS and one from a beach at home in Prince Edward Island.

Mr.H will hit the road this Wednesday, May 11, 2016 with his first Farewell Tour stop slated for Niagara-on-the-Lake. Tune in and we'll be sure to keep you posted on details as he heads east.

And if you aren't already following him on twitter - do it now @JeffHutcheson so you won't miss a minute of all the fun from the road. SABS

What follows is the official Bell Media release...

canada-amTORONTO (May 6, 2016) – After 40 years in broadcasting, veteran sports and weather anchor Jeff Hutcheson announced this morning on-air that he will bring his 18 years at CANADA AM to a close, signing off one last time early this summer. Waking up with viewers for nearly two decades, Hutcheson is known for bringing Canadians together, broadcasting from nearly 400 locations across Canada and around the world. Beloved from coast to coast to coast, Hutcheson hits the road for one last remote broadcast tour before his final turn at the CANADA AM desk.

“I feel truly honoured to have had this incredible journey and to be welcomed into viewers homes everyday across my four decades of broadcasting,” said Jeff Hutcheson. “CANADA AM has given me the experience of a lifetime, working on a team that sets the bar of professionalism and journalism in this industry. Having the opportunity to work and travel around the world has been extraordinary, and I am thrilled that I will have the chance to leave the viewers with one last remote tour, doing what I love the most – showing Canada to Canadians.”

“We are so thankful for Jeff’s enormous contribution to CANADA AM and we will miss him greatly,” said Nanci MacLean, Vice-President, Bell Media Production. “His curiosity, honesty, and joyful spirit lights up the set every morning, as well as the homes of viewers across the country who welcome him with open arms. He reminds Canadians there’s a wonderful and fascinating country outside our doorstep and for that we will always be grateful. Jeff’s warmth and kindness touched the entire nation and leaves an indelible mark on the show.”

Adding to this collection of great memories and sharing his favourite ones from the past, Hutcheson will embark on one last remote tour of Canada beginning Wednesday, May 11. Showcasing hotspots, talking to locals, and delivering his regular weather updates live on location, Jeff kicks off the tour in Niagara-on-the-Lake before heading eastward to continue his journey and series of live broadcasts from Quidi Vidi, NL, a beach in his home province of Prince Edward Island, and from Lunenburg, NS.

Dubbed Canada’s king of the remote broadcast, Hutcheson developed a following and endeared himself to viewers throughout the country and from many destinations around the world including France, England, Ireland, and Australia. Viewers will remember Hutcheson’s countless great moments, from kite skiing on Great Slave Lake in Yellowknife and his broadcast from the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, to his remote from the Toronto Blue Jays Spring Training in Dunedin, Florida.

From meeting the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Charlottetown, PEI, to rallying 30,000 football fans to cheer on their team as honorary mascot to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, to his many adventures on “Breakfast with Jeff,” Hutcheson’s contribution to CANADA AM stretched far beyond the scope of weather and sports to become a friendly and reliable face that viewers look forward to seeing each morning.
