A Whole New FRONTIER For Take The Shot

Posted: November 16, 2015

Well it's been on our radar for a while now - back in early spring we heard the good news that our friends at Take the Shot Productions in St.John's, NL were working on an original period series titled FRONTIER.

TAKE THE SHOT PRODUCTIONS logoThat was exciting for a number of reasons - not the least of which it would be a new series being shot in the province by the same company who had just wrapped on 6 successful seasons of REPUBLIC OF DOYLE.

That's great news for local crews, local businesses and truth be told tourism in general.  It was during our interview with Allan Hawco for Atlantic Business Magazine January 2015 issue in which he confirmed the economic impact a show like that can have... "over $140 million of economic activity had been generated from REPUBLIC OF DOYLE alone in the city of St. John’s over six years. That’s just our production budget spent in the province, that’s excluding any kind of tourism spin-off.”ALLAN HAWCO IN THE SPOLIGHT ABM

And while it's true DOYLE was originally broadcast in Canada on CBC and eventually in 98 countries around the world - it's fair to say FRONTIER puts Take The Shot in the global arena out of the gate.

As for that handsome mug of Hawco's - it's slowly been covered by a shaggy beard over the past number of months... and yes - had created quite the controversy on social media.  It was during our most recent interview on the Nova Scotia set of his forthcoming indy film nineteenseventysomething in which he confirmed he'd been growing it for FRONTIER - although the role for which he was originally cast was now going to an "international star".

That's when he revealed just how much FRONTIER had grown since the project was first announced.  "It's ballooned so big - it's become such an international deal - for Take The Shot it's a huge step forward for us as a company - it's big, it's big... it's so big" (you can watch that interview by clicking here).

Well, today that big news officially dropped - an unprecedented new scripted drama, with a star packed cast and multi layered broadcast plan.  Below you'll find all the details in the official release as issued by Discovery Canada.

We should also note today marked the first day of filming for the show in Louisbourg, Nova ScotiaFRONTIER began production November 8th with additional filming locations set for St. John’s NL, Morrisburg ON and Cornwall in the U.K.

We can also tell you there'll be plenty more cast announcements - including some cool East Coast folks - we just can't say who yet - but we'll be sure to keep you posted as things go on this awesome new show.

And one more thing... HUGE congratulations to the entire Take The Shot team! We're some proud of you lot!!! SABS

Discovery Canada announces GAME OF THRONES and Batman Vs. Superman star Jason Momoa to lead international cast for Canadian Original drama FRONTIER; production begins Nov. 8 in Canada and the U.K.

“Never shying away from new, exciting, and often epic projects, Discovery enters the world of scripted series for the first time with an amazing story of worlds colliding,” said Ken MacDonald, Vice-President and General Manager, Discovery. “The story of FRONTIER is rich, authentic, and teeming with strong characters portrayed by an A-list cast. We’re excited for production to begin, and to partner with Netflix to take this story to international audiences.”

FRONTIER presents an outstanding opportunity for our company and we are thrilled to be in business with Discovery and Netflix on this exciting project,” said Alex Patrick, President of Take the Shot.

Production is now underway in St. John’s, N.L., Morrisburg, Ont., Louisbourg, N.S., and Cornwall, U.K., and will see the original world of FRONTIER begin to take shape. With seeds rooted in Canadian history, and explored for the first time on television, the action-packed and authentic fiction series follows the chaotic and violent struggle to control wealth and power in the North American fur trade of the late 18th century. Told from multiple perspectives, FRONTIER takes place in a world where business negotiations might be resolved with close-quarter hatchet fights, and where delicate relations between Aboriginal tribes and Europeans can spark bloody conflicts.

FRONTIER was officially greenlit for production by Discovery Canada in April 2015, following a 14-month development process between the network and producers. The series is produced by Take The Shot Productions and Factory Backwards, in association with Discovery, the exclusive Canadian broadcaster. Netflix is the international broadcast partner. Edwina Follows is Executive Producer for Discovery, and Ken MacDonald is Vice-President and General Manager, Discovery. Tracey Pearce is Senior Vice-President, Specialty and Pay, Bell Media. Randy Lennox is President, Entertainment Production and Broadcasting, Bell Media. For Take The Shot Productions, Alex Patrick, John Vatcher, Rob Blackie, and Peter Blackie, Allan Hawco, Perry Chafe and Michael Levine are Executive Producers. For Factory Backwards, Brad Peyton and Jeff Fierson are Executive Producers.
