Matthew Crowe is quite comfortable bucking the establishment. As a self-described punk, he has always been in the underdog’s corner. But when Nova Scotia’s Liberal government hinted in April that it planned to dismantle the Film Tax Credit – and then followed through – Crowe took his activism to the next level.

“I knew I had to channel my anger into something productive,” says Crowe, an Assistant Director currently working on THE HEALER.

The 32-year-old – who was working on the film YOUR MONEY OR YOUR WIFE when word of the government cut came down – drew immediately on his creative energy and began producing pins featuring a distinctive image of grip flags and the hashtag #NSfilmjobs. The hashtag has become a rallying cry (on social media and off) in the months since.

A portion of proceeds from the pins – which were available at community film hubs and supportive businesses for $1.75 – went to Feed Nova Scotia. It was Crowe’s way of acknowledging that film and television workers were not the only ones negatively impacted by the provincial budget.

Now he’s selling t-shirts ($22.50, with $5 going to Feed Nova Scotia), hoodies ($50, with $10 to Feed Nova Scotia), as well as embroidered patches and other small items, through his company, Film Scum Industries.

“All I’ve ever wanted to do is make movies,” says Crowe, a former army kid who considers Newfoundland his home province. “I found my family in film, and my community has backed me up.”

His venture meshes nicely with the philanthropic mission and supportive vibe on the set of THE HEALER. The filmmakers have ear-marked a significant donation from the movie’s proceeds for the Serious Fun Children’s Network, founded by actor Paul Newman, which runs camps and programs for seriously ill kids around the world. THE HEALER's writer-director, Paco Arango, sits on the organization’s board of directors and has his own foundation, Aladina, in Spain. A committed volunteer helping children with cancer, Arango’s previous film, MAKTUB, helped fund one of Europe’s most advanced bone-marrow transplant centres.

In terms of his own art, Crowe will continue using the grip-flag motif on his creations. It’s a “no-brainer,” he says, since grips call the light-manipulating devices “black flags” and because one of Crowe’s inspirations is the punk band Black Flag, well-known for anthems decrying abuse and oppression.
