Posted: March 30, 2015

Calling all emerging Nova Scotian musicians! Get your demos ready - Casino Nova Scotia announced today that it will select an Artist in Residence for the second year in a row.  The $20,000 program will provide a local emerging musician or group with financial and professional support through Casino Nova Scotia and partners Music Nova Scotia as well as opportunities to develop their career through performance opportunities.

CASINO NS 20yrs“Our first year for the Artist in Residence program was very successful! The program received tremendous support and celebration from the industry, the media, our customers and employees.  We anticipate this second year to be even more successful,” says Helen MacMillan, Regional Vice President and General Manager of Casino Nova Scotia. “It has been so much fun working with our inaugural Artist in Residence, The Brood. On one level it is hard to let them go, they are such a talented, smart and engaging young group, but we are delighted to have been a part of launching their career and look forward to seeing them on stages around the world. For year two we are eager to discover some of the new, emerging artists from our province.”

Last year’s winner of the $20,000 program was Dartmouth-based psychedelic, rock and roll band, The Brood. With the funding from the program, The Brood are currently working on two new singles which will be produced by Charles Austin and Joel Plaskett - one of which will have a music video to go with it. “This opportunity has opened so many doors for us. It’s really helped get our name and our music out there,” says Seamus Erskine, frontman and lead guitarist. “We’ve learned a lot about the business side of the music industry and we’ve had some pretty amazing performance opportunities, such as Nova Scotia Music Week, and we’re getting ready for Canadian Music Week.”

Applicants can apply online through the Music Nova Scotia website from April 13 to April 30. The evaluation process will include a review of online applications and demos, interview with selected applicants and will conclude with a live performance of the finalists at Casino Nova Scotia’s Schooner Showroom on Friday, June 12. This program will provide the selected musician/group with $20,000 in funding to assist with developing their career through recording, marketing, and live performance opportunities.  Music Nova Scotia is administering the program and will provide career path support and exciting industry showcase opportunities such as Nova Scotia Music Week and Canadian Music Week. Stay tuned for announcements in the coming week.
