Snowbird - The Songs of Gene MacLellan
East Coast musicians pay tribute to an iconic songwriter.
Nearly two decades after his tragic death, family, friends and musicians came together to remember a gifted musician, and to celebrate the legacy of Gene MacLellan, writer of such standards as "Snowbird" and "Put Your Hand in the Hand".
The album Snowbird - The Songs of Gene MacLellan released October 22, 2013, was taken from the tribute concert that was recorded and broadcast nationally by CBC TV and Radio,where Gene's songs were performed by artists including Gene's daughter Catherine MacLellan - herself an acclaimed singer songwriter - as well as iconic East Coast songwriters Ron Hynes and Lennie Gallant, both of whom had performed with Gene MacLellan before his passing.
"People had been waiting for something like this. It became more and more apparent to me as we got cloer to the show, how many lives my dad had touched." said Catherine MacLellan during the concert.
Gene started his music career playing rock and roll, frequenting the Toronto music scene, playing with artists uch as Ronnie Hawkins and Robbie Robertson. He became a regular guest on CBC TV's Don Messer's Jubillee, during the a time he wrote such classic international hits as "Snowbird" recorded by Anne Murray and "Put Your hand int he Hand" by Ocean, both earning GRAMMY and JUNO Awards for Gene and the artists that covered them.
