FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Halifax, Nova Scotia  Oct. 28, 2013

The historic rescue of a two month old infant from a horrific house fire is the focal point of a new book, written by long-time Nova Scotia journalist and university instructor, Janice Landry. Landry’s latest work, “The Sixty Second Story,” pays homage to her late father, Basil Landry, a veteran Halifax firefighter, and, all first responders.

The Sixty Second Story by Janice LandryIt reveals, in gripping detail, with first-hand accounts, exactly what happened that fateful day, 35-years-ago, in October 1978. What did occur has led to Landry receiving a Medal of Bravery after almost losing his life saving another.

Landry executed, with the aid of his peers, but without the aid of his breathing apparatus, the nearly physically impossible rescue of a baby boy.

Landry remains the only Halifax firefighter, in the long and storied history of the department, to ever be awarded this high honour by the Canadian government.

The book begins during a tragic event that has shaped the people of Halifax and Nova Scotia; examining the firefighters who responded during the Halifax Explosion. “The Sixty Second Story” proceeds through the decades by discussing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Critical Incident Stress (CIS). It examines how far we have come in dealing with serious issues that often impact front line workers and their loved ones. The book culminates with Landry tracking down and meeting the family, and, the very boy her father rescued.

Landry is a freelance writer, director and producer. She is also a senior member of the part-time faculty in the Department of Communication Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University. Her book is being published by Pottersfield Press.

“The Sixty Second Story” includes 21 interviews with family, loved ones and first responders who shed more light on what being called-to-duty truly means.
