Michael Coady – No Place Like Home in Newfoundland & Labrador

Occupation:  Actor/Producer/Writer

Place of Birth: St. John’s, NL

Currently Resides: Toronto, ON

Where’s your favourite place in NL to grab a coffee?

I just love the Classic Cafe East on Duckworth Street for a good cup of coffee as well as traditional Newfoundland foods like fish cakes and toutons, while enjoying a great view of the Narrows.

Where’s your favourite place in NL to grab a pint?

I have always gravitated toward The Duke (Duke of Duckworth) as a great place for a pint; been imbibing there since before I was old enough (Don’t tell owner Terry O'Rourke that!)

Where’s your favourite place to shop in NL?

I just love wandering around the shops downtown St. John’s, a 5 minute walk from the house I own there on Patrick Street. So many great places on Water Street and Duckworth Street!

What's the one meal you crave when you're away from NL?

I crave Fish and Chips from By The Beach Café in St. Philips every now and again (with the Fi-n-Chi from The Duke in a neck-in-neck race to the finish).

Where in Newfoundland would we stand to see your favourite view?

On the hill above Quidi Vidi Gut at the highest point of the East Coast Trail there … the quaint little Newfoundland outport (in the midst of the city) below you, Cabot Tower a couple peaks to the south of you, the city sprawls on to the west and nothing but wide ocean to the east of you. Cape Spear off in the distance reminds you that we really live on the edge!

Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit Newfoundland & Labrador:

1. Get out of St. John’s … you need to get a non-townie sense of the place. Even if you can only get as far as a run down the Southern Shore to Bay Bulls for a whale watching tour with the O’Brien’s or tour a bit of Conception Bay from Avondale to Brigus. Further afield, you will be delighted by a trip to Trinity and the summer theatre festival there, or if you got the time, Gros Morne is a different landscape entirely.

2. George Street for a night of live music, fun and foolishness. Hit Fog City … hard! Then stroll up the strip for a cavalcade of craziness and stop by O’Reillys. Off the main drag, make sure you visit The Duke, Erin’s Pub and The Ship.

3. Visit Linda Hennebury at The Inn of Olde in Quidi Vidi for a shot of rum – she’s downhome sweetheart with a wild side and awesome hospitality. It’s a cozy spot, especially with a fire in the wood stove on a cold winter day. The walls of the place are a feast for the eyes!

What makes Newfoundland such a special place on earth for you?

Newfoundland is with me wherever I go, though part of me is always missing home! The island is almost an interior landscape for me. I love its rugged beauty … I am steeped in it like a strong tea. I admire its people, their resilience and ingenuity, and their warmth. I love that from what can be a harsh climate and inhospitable rocky terrain comes a people whose soul is music and whose sense of humor and gift for story-telling is bred in the bone. I love how Newfoundlanders will find each other wherever in the world they end up; In Los Angeles, I joined the Newfoundland Club of Southern California. They tried to make me president as soon as I showed up at a party. I settled for the Screech-in Master position! They say it will be easy to spot the Newfoundlanders in heaven … they are the ones that want to go home 🙂
