The Farmers’ Markets of Nova Scotia Cooperative is excited to be coordinating the province’s Second Annual Farmers’ Market Week which will take place from Saturday, August 3rd through Saturday, August 10th, 2013. The 8 day event is being celebrated by close to thirty markets province-wide in partnership with local restaurants, businesses, and community organizations that are promoting local dishes and hosting special events.

We-LOVE-farmers-markets1Saturday, August 3rd: The week will open with “Bring-a-Friend to Market Day”. We encourage market-goers to introduce a new face to their local haven and show them what you love about your market before celebrating Food Day Canada. Special events at markets around the province include Live Music at New Ross and a Tasting & Sampling Extravaganza at the Bridgewater Farmers’ Market (the newest Member Market to join the FMNS Cooperative!). One of our Community Partners, the Urban Farm Museum Society of Spryfield invites you to their Farm Market Open House from noon until 4pm. The Truro Farmers’ Market is also hosting a Chalk-the-Block chalk drawing, pony rides, AND a petting zoo! If you Bring-a-Friend to Truro you can look forward to a free Truro Farmers’ Market bag to bring home all your groceries in!

Sunday, August 4th: Head to the beautiful Musquodoboit Harbour Farmers’ Market from 9am-1pm for Live Music and face-painting! The Halifax Seaport Market is also open from 8am-4pm and if you’re a bit more north stop in at the Mabou Farmers’ Market between 11am and 2pm.

fm1Monday, August 5th: Visit the Cape Breton Farmers’ Market in Sydney between 11am-2pm for an IncrEDIBLE Picnic sponsored in part by Select Nova Scotia. They are offering a brunch specially made and served to you by the spectacular vendors and volunteers of this Cape Breton market.

Tuesday, August 6th: Today looks like a good day to be heading down the South Shore to visit the Mahone Bay Farmers’ Market at the Blockhouse School Project (63 School Rd.). Mahone Bay has teamed up with Cuisine for Life’s Georgia Barnwell in support of both local and seasonal eating as well as preserving via dehydration techniques. You can also look forward to a Demonstration & Discussion by Heather Squires from Sweetwood Farm and poetry reading from The Second Seeding of Open Heart Farming by Mary Ellen Sullivan.  Bridgetown Farmers’ Market offers another local food oasis from 11am-3pm after which you can head to Tantallon for their Farmers’ Market, open from 2pm-6pm.

Wednesday, August 7th: Mid-week festivities consist of some really unique opportunities! The Halifax Seaport Market has organized a fifty person Farm Visit to Foxhill Cheeshouse, Noggins Corner Farm, Getaway Farm and Oakview Farm. Please note that the event asks you to bring your own lunch.

fm2In the evening Wolfville has organized a Sustainability Fair during Community Night at the Market from 4pm-7pm where the hosts describe a space for grocery shopping and learning about sustainability initiatives in the Valley as well as tools for making sustainable decisions about your land.

Annpolis Royal Farmers’ Market is also open from 10am-2pm and Truro‘s convenient Wednesday time from noon-6pm.

Thursday, August 8th: Stay tuned for special events in Lunenburg whose Market is open from 830am-1230pm. You can also start the weekend early by making your way to the Argyle Farmers’ Market from 3pm-7pm or visit the Port Hawkesbury Farmers’ Market between noon and 4pm.

Participating vendors include Norbert at Selwood Green, Darren at Wrap So D, Ella at Seaport Bread Shop, Andrew and Melissa at Noggins, Seth and Jessie at Fruition, and Lia at Maritime Pastry Co. Register here for this unique opportunity that received a write-up in the Toronto Star when it was originally organized last year for travel writers visiting the area.

The Halifax Seaport Market is also hosting a Demonstration & Discussion with Cuisine for Life owner Georgia Barnwell at noon who will share her expertise regarding preservation and dehydration techniques.

Don’t have the day off? Stop by the Partners for Care Farmers’ Market during your Friday lunch hour from 10am-2pm.

HubbardsMarket-300x180Saturday, August 10th: The closing day of Farmers’ Market Week is “To Vendors with Love: Thank Your Vendor Day” which is in recognition of market vendors who work passionately and tirelessly to provide local options for Nova Scotia residents. Show them some extra love today! At Hubbards, let your creative side shine, especially, if you like playing with your food, and sign up for the Edible Art Competition from 8am-noon. Live Music will also be featured at New Ross and Truro Farmers’ Market will once more have a petting zoo and pony rides available.

The Ecology Action Centre is holding a Lacto-Fermentation Workshop from 930am-2pm which will educate anyone who stops by about the preservation method as well as involve making and sampling of sauerkraut.
