Andrew Hunter – At Home Here in Nova Scotia

Occupation: Self Employed Musician

Place of Birth: Florenceville, NB

Currently Resides: Porters Lake, NS

Where’s your favourite place in Nova Scotia to grab a coffee?

I'm terrible at picking just one spot... it would have to be a tie between at home on my deck or on my way to the beach for a surf.

Where’s your favourite place in Nova Scotia to grab a pint?

The Henry House ! Or The Seahorse Tavern – try the Horsepower if you dare

Where’s your favourite place to shop in Nova Scotia?

I'm not a huge fan of shopping, however it’s fun to pop by Kannon Beach Surf shop in Lawrencetown to check out the new boards and wetsuits  I do most of my shopping at the gas stations, (Ha!) …between touring around with the band and surfing missions… that has to be my most frequented shopping experience.

Where in Nova Scotia would we stand to see your favourite view?

On the hill at Lawrencetown Beach.

Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit Nova Scotia:

1. Try surfing at Lawrencetown or Martinique beach.

2. Take the coastal route Sambro/Herring Cove road from Halifax to Crystal Crescent Beach.

3. Day: Halifax Waterfront , Night :Argyle Street

What makes Nova Scotia such a special place on earth for you?

Nova Scotia is truly a special place to me having lived and travelled across the country trying different spots, It picked me. After a few years of bouncing back and forth between Canada and family in Hawaii, I left the idyllic setting of Maui, to settle here back in 2005.

I found myself missing the music scene and wanting to give it a shot... (being a musician), in order to do that you need to be where the work is. It’s also close to the surf , and of course , family and friends in NB.

Andrew Hunter feature winter surfing

I am not a big fan of winter after being spoiled in the tropics, but there is one thing the winter here means to me now; Surf. I have been surfing here year round since 2000. We get our biggest and best waves during the coldest months of the year… and I love it. You can find me any chilly winter morning after or during a blizzard- up before the sun and chasing the surf up and down the coast with my buddies.

The weather here is extreme. It can be tough and trying at times, but when it all comes together it is truly a rewarding experience and there is nowhere else in the world I’d rather be.

Nova Scotia is special to me for its music and culture, but mostly it’s the Ocean that I can not live without.

I am lucky to live in the country near the surf and the thriving music scene is only 30 minutes away. Can’t complain 😉
