Billy MacLellan – No Place Like Home in Nova Scotia
Place of Birth: God's Country, East Bay, Cape Breton, NS
Currently Resides: Los Angeles, CA
Where’s your favourite place in Nova Scotia to grab a coffee?
The Tim Horton's in St. Peter's is the prettiest Tim Horton's in the country. Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop.
But the best cup of coffee I ever had was is Halifax. Although it was more for the company than it was the coffee. Fellow actor Walter Borden used to sit at some little independent place on Spring Garden Road every morning. I was at Neptune doing Anne of Green Gables. Didn't know Walter very well but the few times I met him, he was always kind to me. Saw him sitting in this coffee shop every day on my way to work. Something told me to just go in. Say hello. I did and he asked me to join him. I was going through a really rough spell. I was in a kind of "Is this as good as it gets?" place. Couldn't shake it for the life of me. Walter said,"Instead of asking yourself 'Is this as good as it gets?', why don't you ask yourself, "How good can I stand it?". Never thought of life like that before. Didn't know the answer then, still don't. But willing to find the out. Best cup of coffee I ever had.
Where’s your favourite place in Nova Scotia to grab a pint?
I don't drink. So…I will…instead…give my "Top 5 Nova Scotia Albums That You Should Have in Your Music Library." (Listen to them and have a pint for me.)
In no particular order…
Stones - Gordie Sampson
Spanish Bay - Steven MacDougall
Song Dog - Jimmy Rankin
Hi, How are You Today? - Ashley MacIsaac
Looking Back - Volume 2 - The Songs - J.P. Cormier
Where’s your favourite place to shop in Nova Scotia?
Cape Breton Curiosity Shop on Charlotte Street in Sydney. John Pettipas Gift Shop beside the Causeway in Auld's Cove, that guy is a trip. It's like a roller-coaster, get in and enjoy the ride.
What's the one meal you miss the most when you're away?
Anything at my grandmother's kitchen table. Even tea tastes better in Cape Breton.
Where in Nova Scotia would we stand to see your favourite view?
Tough one. Lighthouse Point in Louisbourg. That's a pretty good public one. The others you'd probably need a guide to get to them.
Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit Nova Scotia:
1. Drive the Cabot Trail with someone you love.
2. Spend a day or two in Louisbourg. (Bring your camera)
3. See/buy/gift/support live Nova Scotia music.
When I am there, something unlocks on the inside. Dunno. You have to have been there to know.
