Kinley Dowling – At Home Here in Prince Edward Island

Occupation: Freelance musician. I mostly spend my days in a van with the band Hey Rosetta!

Place of Birth: Charlottetown, PEI

Currently Resides: After a dreamy childhood growing up in Stratford PEI, and then spending seven years
in Halifax, I've returned to the motherland, and live in Charlottetown, PEI.

Where’s your favourite place in Prince Edward Island to grab a coffee?

I'm lactose intolerant, so I usually gravitate to places with soy milk. My new favourite place is called Young Folk and the Kettle Black. They just opened a second location steps away from my apartment, and they have almond milk! Chris Francis will tell you a magical tale of roasting coffee beans. It is a friendly place. Also, their main location also has a cool shop upstairs.

Where’s your favourite place in Prince Edward Island to grab a pint?

Well I'm not really a beer drinker, but after living with a celiac friend in Halifax, I've found my drink of choice - cider. In the summer time I love going to the patio of The Globe to have a cider with my pals, and work on our burns/tans. In the winter the coziest place to go is Marc's Studio. It's a tiny place with wing backed chairs, high ceilings, and even a little getaway up the stairs so you can get all the gossip on the comfy couch. Their drink Kiwi Basil Smash is a flavour explosion of greatness.

Where’s your favourite place to shop in Prince Edward Island?

I really love shopping at Moonsnail. The make their own soap in the back room, and it smells so good in there. They sell salt rock lamps, incense, and all things of beauty to make your home a cozy cocoon. After a month or two on the road in dingy hotel rooms with the boys in the band, it's really nice to come home to an apartment that glows and smells nice. No offense to the boys. I'm sure they don't approve of my daily suitcase explosion. I also really like to shop at The Dunes (especially at their sale in October where they give you free martinis). They sell interesting furniture, jewellery and art from around the world. The food there is also amazing. They've really got it figured out.

Where in Prince Edward Island would we stand to see your favourite view?

I have two favourite places. On the boardwalk at Victoria Park is a beautiful view of the water. When the sun is setting by the lighthouse it's really spectacular. My other favourite view is from the top of the stairs at Lakeside Beach. When you reach the top of the stairs, there are dunes on either side of you, and suddenly the view unfolds and you can see miles and miles of beach on either side of you. If you go in the off season you might be the only one there. There's not only the ocean in front of you, but if you walk down the beach to the left, you'll find a fresh water lake (hence the name Lakeside). If you go to the right, you might even see some endangered Piping Plover birds.

Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit Prince Edward Island:

1. Go swimming at Lakeside. But pack some peanut butter sandwiches, and get some Pepsi and chips at the Irving on the way.
2. After Lakeside, stop in at Trailside Cafe for possibly the best fish cakes in the world. Stay for an intimate concert of one of the many amazing artists they have performing all summer. The Trailside has charm.
3. If you're still good to go, you need to experience a show at Baba's. It's a tiny little bar where all the best bands play. It's a living room vibe, and if you met anyone on your trip to PEI, they'll probably be at Baba's at night. You should really try the "Sweet O". AKA "Sweet Oblivion". It's a pitcher of a lot of alcohol, but topped with a sliced green apple. You'll need at least two other people. Dancing will ensue.

What makes Prince Edward Island such a special place on earth for you?

PEI is my favourite place in the world. I'm really lucky and get to see a lot of the world touring with Hey Rosetta!, but my favourite place will always be here. It's a quaint little place, but that's what gives it its charm. Everyone is really friendly and there is a great appreciation for the arts here.
