Smiling Jack on the IceCaps – Report #31

Posted: May 7, 2012

The gritty St. John's IceCaps have a 3 - 1 lead after 4 games in an extremely hard fought series with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The last 2 games played at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre ended in overtime victories for the IceCaps.

Brock Trotter & Eddie PasqualeOn Tuesday May 4 the IceCaps defeated the Penguins 3-1 with Brock Trotter scoring a pair of breakaway goals – including the eventual game winner early in the third period. Eddie Pasquale stopped 19 shots for the win. Patrice Cormier, Moncton NB had an assist and played a strong game for the IceCaps.

On Wednesday May 5 the Penguins, in what was a mirror image of the previous night's game, scored a 3-1 victory. This time the Penguins played with greater intensity and dominated play. Still Eddie Pasquale was brilliant making 35 saves.

On Saturday May 8, Brock Trotter's second goal of the game in overtime gave the IceCaps a 2-1 win.

Top - Jason King & bottom - Ben MaxwellEddie Pasquale wasn’t tested as often as he had been in previous games, but he was solid in goal.

Jason King, Corner Brook NL has 2 assists for the Caps.

On Sunday May 9 Ben Maxwell scored just 37 seconds into overtime to give the IceCaps a come from behind 3-2 victory over the Penguins.

Coach Keith McCambridge said the character in the dressing room that has been evident all season showed itself in this contest. Eddie Pasquale faced only 16 shots but was strong when it counted.

Geoff WalkerFor the record - Geoff Walker, Charlottetown, PEI made a nice pass to assist on the second Penguins goal and played a strong game.

The next game is in Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday May 8. Based on what we have seen to date, the Penguins will come out strongly, fight for their playoff lives and win at home.

If the Penguins win, the next game will be at Mile One Centre on Friday May 11. Should a 7th game be necessary, and I predict it will not, it will also be played at Mile One on Saturday May 12.
