Feel free to call New Brunswick the 'Major Motion Picture Province', because as I post a huge crew has moved into the historical settlement of Kings Landing to shoot the feature film COPPERHEAD.
Based on the novel of the same name by Harold Frederic – screenwriter Bill Kauffman tells a story of the US Civil War from a very different angle.
“It is a story of the war at home—of a family ripped apart by war, of fathers set against sons and daughters, of a community driven to an appalling act of vengeance against a man who insists on exercising his right to free speech during wartime. A story of the violent passions and burning feuds that set ablaze the home-front during the Civil War, COPPERHEAD is also a timeless and deeply moving examination of the price of dissent, the place of the individual amidst the hysteria of wartime, and the awful cost of war—a cost measured not in dollars but in fractured families, broken loves, and men dead before their time.
Set for release in 2013, COPPERHEAD is being directed by Ron Maxwell, who also directed the acclaimed GETTYSBURG and GODS AND GENERALS, so it's fair to say the script is in truly capable hands.
Also appearing in COPPERHEAD... a healthy roster of great Atlantic Canadian talent including, from Nova Scotia - Genevieve Steele, Josh Cruddas, Hugh Thompson, Brian Downer, Ciaran MacGillivray, Mary Fay Coady Andrea Lee Norwood and Elizabeth Richardson, and from New Brunswick - Wally MacKinnon, Robbie O'Neil and Walter Learning. Just a few of the great East Coast folks featured on screen along with the many on the production crew too.
Reports from the set are of a "fantastic" working environment – both creatively and most definitely from a setting standpoint.
Kings Landing includes “over 70 historic buildings, complete with artifacts, furniture, tools and equipment” just as you would have discovered New Brunswick in the 1800's.
For the sake of this movie though - Prince William, NB has assumed the role of Upstate New York.
We're thrilled that we can show you the video above with a behind the scenes glimpse into COPPERHEAD. This video was created by Hemmings House during the 2nd week of filming (click here to see the video from week 1).
We'll have much more as the production continues – so stay tuned. SABS
