Today Great Big Sea front man Alan Doyle launches his very own “satellite trip from the mother ship” with the release of his first ever solo CD Boy on Bridge.
The Petty Harbour, NL born singer, songwriter, musician, producer and actor considers himself one of the lucky ones. In an interview with Canada AM this past Monday (05/14/12) Doyle spoke of the bridge on which the title track is based – the very spot he used to dream and plan as a boy – now he's admittedly living the dream. “Part travel log, part record, part wacky” Alan says Boy on Bridge is “a great picture of 2012 – 10 months here and there.”
The project includes a multitude of talented contributions from his friends too...
From long time collaborator Grammy winning Cape Bretoner Gordie Sampson to guitar hero Colin James, Canadian Music Hall of Fame member Jim Cuddy and Juno winner Hawksley Workman – to name just a few.
Indeed the liner notes read like a who's who of whose cool and YES – they do include Alan's on-screen and in-studio buddy Russell Crowe.
The two released their digital project The Crowe/Doyle Songbook, Vol. III last summer performing two sold out shows in St.John's, and reunited with their Robin Hood co-stars Scott Grimes and Kevin Durand for the Season 3 Premiere of Republic of Doyle this past January (watch). For Boy on a Bridge they re-worked the co-write "Testify" which first appeared on Crowe's 2006 My Hand, My Heart -which Doyle produced.
The lead single off the project “I've Seen A Little” (video above) was co-written with Gordie Sampson and Nashville's Troy Verges, and blends Celtic with Country for what's sure to be the first of many hits from this new CD.
Alan will be on tour – first for acoustic meet & greet performances in Halifax and St.John's – then off on dates throughout North America before returning to Atlantic Canada for shows in June. (see details below)
Oh, and as for the aforementioned 'mother ship'...
Alan and his Great Big Sea band mates Séan McCann and Bob Hallett will celebrate 20 years together with a greatest hits package and an anniversary tour in 2013.
