Smiling Jack on the IceCaps – Report #27

Posted: April 9, 2012

The St. John's IceCaps split four games played at Mile One Centre during the past week.  The result is that the IceCaps require only one point to clinch the second seed in the upcoming playoffs.

Danny Dries & Will O'NeillOn Tuesday April 3rd the IceCaps defeated the Portland Pirates 5 – 2 New college signees Will O'Neill and Danny Dries both recorded their first professional goals in this contest.

On Wednesday April 4th the IceCaps ran into a desperate Pirates team who needed to win to keep their playoff hopes alive. The result was a 5 – 1 victory for Portland. It was not one of the IceCaps best efforts. Garth Murray scored the lone St. John's goal.

Eric O'DellOn Saturday April 7th the IceCaps went up against the Springfield Falcons, another team desperate for a win. That hunger resulted in 6 – 3 victory for the Falcons. The bright spot for the IceCaps was a hat trick for rookie Eric O'Dell.

On Sunday April 8th the IceCaps rebounded to gain a 4 -3 victory over the Pirates. Eric O'Dell continued his hot pace scoring 2 goals to give him 5 in 2 games. Jason King, Corner Brook, NL scored his team leading 21st goal. St. John's native Zach O’Brien was in the lineup for the IceCaps and played a few shifts.

The IceCaps close out their season with 3 games on the road next week, Friday, April 13th at Worcester Sharks, Saturday, April 14th at the Springfield Falcons and they'll close out the season playing the Manchester Monarchs on Sunday April 15th.

Coach McCambridge will have some decisions to make on his playoff rooster. Patrice Cormier, Moncton, NB and Spencer Machacek will be returning from the Winnipeg Jets and several veteran players, including Captain Jason Jaffray will hopefully be returning from the injured list. With several of the rookies playing exceptionally well the Coach will have some difficult decisions to make.
