Smiling Jack on the IceCaps – Report #28

Posted: Monday, April 16, 2012

The St. John's IceCaps finished a very successful first season with a 43-25-5-3 record for 94 points. The IceCaps sold out each of their 38 home games.

Now it is on to the opening round of the Calder Cup Playoffs where the second seeded IceCaps play the seventh seeded Syracuse Crunch in a Best of Five series starting Friday April 20 in Syracuse and continuing the next night.

In order to maintain home ice advantage in the 2-3 series the IceCaps have elected to play games 1 and 2 in Syracuse and return home for Game 3 on Wednesday April 25. If necessary game 4 will be held Friday April 27 and Game 5 on Saturday April 28.

During the past week, with nothing at stake, on Friday April 13th the IceCaps defeated the Worcester Sharks 3 - 1. Jason King,Corner Brook, NL scored his team leading 22nd goal of the season.

On Saturday April 14th the IceCaps dropped a 3 - 1 decision to the Springfield Falcons. The IceCaps tuning up for the playoffs used David Aebischer in goal.

On Sunday April 15th the IceCaps lost their final game of the year 4 - 2 to the Manchester Monarchs - fighting for a playoff spot.

Patrice Cormier, Moncton, NB scored his 18th goal of the season. Eddie Pasquale was in goal.

Prior to the IceCaps going on their road trip I had the pleasure of interviewing Head Coach Keith McCambridge in his office at Mile One Centre.

Coach McCambridge, as he has been all year, continued to be unfailing courteous and directly answered my questions.

SJ: Do you expect to have most, if not all of the players on the injured list available for the playoffs?

Coach McCambridge: The lineup that concluded our season here in St. John's plus Patrice Cormier and Spencer Machacek is what I am counting on for the playoffs. However, some of the guys are skating and perhaps some might be back. Captain Jason Jaffray is still in Winnipeg, will be seeing a back specialist, and there is no chance of him returning this season.

SJ: Has Brock Trotter started working out with the team?

Coach McCambridge: He has been skating on a non-contact basis. If he gets in the lineup, he will add an offensive dimension to our lineup.

SJ: Do you expect to name a # 1 goaltender and go with the hot hand?

Coach McCambridge: The balance between the 2 goalies has been one of our strengths all year. However, we will go with the hot hand.

.

For the benefit of those who may not be familiar with the AHL's Clear Day List we quote from a March 6th press release from the IceCaps: “According to AHL by-laws, only those players listed on a team's Clear Day roster are eligible to compete in the remainder of the 2011-12 regular season and in the Calder Cup Playoffs, unless emergency conditions arise as a result of recall, injury or suspension. Teams may also add signed junior players or players on amateur tryout contracts after their respective junior or college seasons are complete.”

The IceCaps Clear Day Roster is as follows....

GOALTENDERS : David Aebischer, Edward Pasquale

SKATERS:

John Albert Carl Klingberg Paul Postma
Patrice Cormier Arturs Kulda Travis Ramsay
Jason DeSantis Maxime Macenauer Zack Redmond
Brett Festerling Spencer Machacek Marco Rosa
Aaron Gagnon Ben Maxwell Raymond Sawada
Jason Jaffary Derek Meech Brock Trotter
Jason King Garth Murray

As I understand the emergency conditions if you have 3 players injured you can add 1 player.  Incidentally, the omission of Eric O'Dell from the foregoing list is not an error. O'Dell, who has been the hottest IceCap since he returned to the lineup was not on the list submitted to the league. Perhaps he will be added under the emergency conditions.

Its great to have meaningful hockey in April. Best wishes to the IceCaps to go deep in the playoffs. SJ
