SPOILER ALERT – this post contains Season 3 finale plot details – so if you haven't seen it yet click here – watch it and then come back for the post....please.

Whadda ya at? It's Wednesday – Doyleday as it were...and there's nothing left but the crying.

The tears are for the end of another awesome season of REPUBLIC OF DOYLE and the many months waiting for its return next January (a point we'll get to in a minute).  Allan Hawco Pre-Season 3 interviewSo in lieu of watching – I thought it would be good to reflect on the year that was Season 3.

Funny to think about it now – because when I interviewed Allan Hawco at St.John's Harbour last summer...he really did give me a lot of clues as to how the season would unfold... (watch here and you'll see what I mean)

Let's start with the subject of  Leslie...

REPUBLIC OF DOYLE - Leslie Bennett Season 3During the interview I saidSgt. Leslie Bennett is the salt of the earth... too nice to be a cop” and Allan replied “Oh man – she has a dark side to her - trust me”.

Well, we definitely saw a harder side to the Sargent this season. With the exception of a few fleeting moments of affection in Ep. 306 The Dating Game and a wild dream sequence in Ep. 308 Two Jakes and a Baby

Leslie did her best to keep it all 'business' and 'bad cop' this season.

That didn't stop me from waiting for the moment they'd reunite however – so it's no surprise my favourite moment of the season happened during the last scene of Episode 309 Mirror Mirror.... remember the French bit....have mercy!

Yes, love was on the back burner for Jake this season, but not for Des... and his Doctor friend.  So let's move on to Des...

REPUBLIC OF DOYLE - Des Courtney Season 3I asked Allan about the character... “will there be an even bigger role for Des in Season 3” and Allan replied “oh yeah...Mark (O'Brien) is a real delight to write for... he's one of my favourite actors”

Well he wasn't kidding. Des was definitely front and centre this season – between the kidnapping and the kissing, the criminal Dad, the cranky boss and the crazy comebacks, not to mention the web show – it was a big year for Jake's sidekick – and judging by the twitter stream every Wednesday – fans LOVE him! #DESrocks.

Top - Allan Hawco with Rick Mercer on Signal Hill, bottom - GTO exploding in Ep. 313Another thing fans love is Jake's car... in a separate video interview entitled “Allan Hawco Clears Things Up” recorded on the same day...I asked Allan about the GTO.

You see, last year we had a lot of folks find our site after searching for info about Jake's wheels in one form or another – so I asked “how many GTOs are there?” he answered 3 ½ GTOs.

When I pressed him for clarity – he told me there were 2 blue – one for stunts, and one for 'other stuff', there was another one for spare parts and the other was a shell “in case I want to blow it up” he said.. and so they did...BIG TIME!!!

I asked him about guest stars and he said there would be many. Matter of fact on the day we met for that interview they were in the midst of shooting parts of Episode 301 The Streets of St.John's which was loaded with stars like Alan Doyle, Scott Grimes, Kevin Durand and Russell Crowe – and the next episode featured Shannon Tweed.

REPUBLIC OF DOYLE -top - guest stars Alan Doyle, Scott Grimes, Kevin Durand, Russell Crowe, Mark Critch Bottom - Shannon Tweed, Nicholas Campbell, Victor Garber, Shawn Doyle & Gordon Pinsent

The season saw the return of Gordon Pinsent as Maurice Becker, Victor Garber as Garrison Steele, Nicholas Campbell as Martin Poole, Shawn Doyle as Carl Maher, Mark Critch as Ned Bishop and, in the last 20 seconds, we saw Paul Gross return as Tinny's Dad – have mercy!

Top - Marthe Bernard (Tinny) & Krista Bridges (Kathleen) Bottom - Lynda Boyd (Rose) & Sean McGinley (Malachy)Which brings me to my last point...in most shows the last shot of Tinny and Kathleen would have just left them holding the picture – yes, we would see Tinny's reaction - but there would be no reveal of the father's face until the next season. Same with Mal and Rose... in the remaining seconds of the show we see them walking out of the jail – arm in arm...again - most finales would have left them behind bars and left us wondering 'how are they ever going to get out'.

Again going back to my pre-season interview I asked Allan about all the 'cliffhanger business' at the end of Season 2... and he said “you never really set out to make a cliff hanger a cliffhanger – you're just trying to tell the most interesting story”.

Final Scene Season 3 - Allan Hawco (Jake) with Mark O'Brien (Des)Well – really when you size it up – this finale left us with only one cliffhanger – Des. His GSW (gun shot wound) did not look good as Ron Hynes sang “Atlantic Blue”

Will he make it? Odds are YES... but his remarks about “being ready to get shot” etc., earlier in the episode and the bomb-diffusing bonding he and Jake did - really do give you reason to pause...and cause to wonder – is something bad going to happen to our pal Mr. Courtney?!

We don't know now...but will we ever?

You see... in the most ironic twist of all - comes the cliffhanger no one saw coming... #CBCcuts.

Cuts in federal funding means CBC will be making cuts of its own – with respect to TV shows Executive Vice President of English Services, Kirstine Stewart wrote the following “On Television, there will be more repeats, as we need to commission six fewer original primetime series and fewer specials (more details to come as a part of our season launch on May 10th) to deal with our budget shortfall.” (source)

Allan Hawco (Jake Doyle) REPUBLIC OF DOYLEHmmmm.... so will REPUBLIC OF DOYLE be canceled? Odds are NO... but on the off chance the unlikely does happen – you can believe two things for certain –

#1. There will be a public outcry of crazed proportions from Canada's East Coast and way beyond

AND

#2. Jake Doyle will return...some how, some way, he'll be back! He'll just be driving another car.

  2. I've been re-watching season three with one of my friends (hooking more viewers!), and it really shows that care has been put into every episode. Other shows can often have "filler" episodes that don't stand out, but I know when I sit down to watch RoD, I am in for a rip-roaring good time. I haven't been disappointed yet! :-)

  3. My husband and I LOVE this show down in USA's Philly area! Have to wait for my Canadian friend to record it; send me the dvd; and then I buy the entire season once it's released! Really enjoy the quirky characters and beautiful scenery . . . and the occasional added bonus of Alan Doyle! RofD is a nice alternative to the violent crime shows that hog our airwaves.

  4. Republic of Doyle is an amazing Canadian show. With so few really good shows, it would be ridiculous for the CBC to cancel it

  8. My husband love everything about The Republic of Doyle, the writing is superb and it is so uniquely Canadian and East Coast Canadian. Let's hope the CBC gives this show the long life it so well deserves.

  9. We both love the show watching it after its "imported" into IRELAND. Can't believe Des took a bullet... Last of the season... Oh no.

  10. Republic of Doyle is a fantastic show in an ocean of talk sows and mediocre tv based on poor and trash subject based {not so} reality programming. I am so glad that I live in the Detroit area and grew up on Canadian television and also their British programming so I knew/know and set my viewing standards higher. I pray the CBC keeps this program on the air. I refused to change my expensive tv provider to less expensive provider because they do not offer the Canadian stations I love (including and not limited to CBC and TVO).

One big question: WHEN DOES SEASON 4 BEGIN?

  15. Love Republic of Doyle. It sucks we have to wait until January for the new season. Why such a short season Jan to April. Every other show does Sept/Oct to Apr/May. Please give us a longer season. It really is a great show.
