Last night, at the Joseph R. Smallwood Arts and Culture Centre in Gander, NL, the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC) presented the 27th Arts Awards.
“It is only fitting that we gather this evening to celebrate the astounding diversity of our artists and their creations. The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council is both proud and humbled by the role it plays in our vibrant community,” said NLAC Chair Tom Gordon. “From sustaining support to our major companies to the exciting projects of hundreds of individual artists to our innovative arts-in-education programs, the Arts Council has been part of jump starting the dynamic and compelling work of the province’s creative community.”
There were two inductees into the NLAC Hall of Honour - An award that recognizes a distinguished lifetime contribution to the cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Those inductees were Labrador grass basket maker Garmel Rich and CBC arts journalist Suzanne Woolridge.
A special Patron of the Arts Award given in recognition of an ongoing commitment to the arts in
Newfoundland and Labrador through innovative, community, or sustained support of artistic activity was presented to Heather McKinnon.
