Kelley Mooney – At Home Here in PEI
Occupation: Singer/Songwriter and Executive Assistant, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
Place of Birth: Born in Boston, MA but raised in Iona, PEI
Currently Resides: Charlottetown, PEI
Where’s your favourite place in PEI to grab a coffee?
My kitchen. But if I’m out and about, I love the lattes at Leonhard’s Bakery – and the pastries are to die for too!
Where’s your favourite place in PEI to grab a pint?
I don’t drink, but if I did, it would probably be the Olde Dublin Pub. Best 2 for 1 steak in town.
Where’s your favourite place to shop in PEI?
Anyplace where there’s a sale on! I love me a good shoe store, so my favourites are J. Redshoes on Queen Street, and at the Confederation Court Mall - Uptown Shoes, Lady Slipper (great clothes there too) and Chameleon’s Hanger (also fantastic clothes and cosmetics).
Where in PEI would we stand to see your favourite view?
Every time I crest the hill at Tea Hill, it takes my breath away. As you’re driving up the grade, the sky falls into the ocean and then all of a sudden, there’s a full panoramic view of Hillsborough Bay – it’s simply beautiful and peaceful and makes you want to stop your car right at the top of the hill. DON’T, though!
My equally favourite view is in Iona - my parents’ house as I’m driving down the hill towards it. They take so much pride in their property; at Christmas time, the trees are all lit up and you can see the Christmas tree in the living room window from the road at the end of a long lane. In the spring/summer and fall, the yard is always full of flowers and the driveway is bolstered by a row of railway ties placed there by my father and lined with wild roses.
There is a good sized pond in the yard and by times, up to a couple of dozen Canada geese call it home.
Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit PEI:
1. Drive around and get lost – take your camera
2. Go to a ceilidh – it’s the most fun you can have with your pants on
3. Find a beach (1/2 hour in any direction) with a good book & nothing to do
What makes PEI such a special place on earth for you?
Well, first, it’s home. It’s where my family is. There was a time when at least one of us (5 kids) was living off-Island. Now we’re all home and that’s what warms me the most.
PEI is such an easy, pleasing place to live. It takes me 7 minutes to get to work from about 7 kilometers away. The biggest traffic jam is outside a Tim Hortons and waiting 2 lights to get through the intersection is an oddity. And nobody honks.
The scenery gives a body peace, and the people give you laughter and kindness. I lived away for about 10 years, and it’s true what they say; you can go, but you never really leave. And you’ll always come back.

Have sat on the front row when you performed Hallelujah at a ceilidh the same night you sang to your little red haired girl. What a treat you should be very proud of your special talent. Hope your Christmas was great and I am sure 2014 will be another successful year. I will locate the ceilidh next year that you will be performing at...I will be on the front row with my wife. Thanks
