Smiling Jack on the IceCaps Report #17

Atlantic Canada's Professional Hockey team, the St John's IceCaps have come to the All-Star break leading the Eastern Conference of the AHL. The IceCaps have lengthened their lead in the Atlantic Division to 8 points.

We have been saying all along that this team has great character and is a tribute to those who put it together. Danny Williams, Glenn Stanford and Keith McCambridge all have to share in the credit, but it is acknowledged that General Manager, Craig Heisinger is the chief architect of the team. Mr Heisinger we salute you!

The IceCaps completed a six game road trip to New England, winning all three games last week giving them 10 out of a possible 12 points. On Wednesday January 25^th the IceCaps defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 4-3 in a shootout. Jason DeSantis had a goal and an assist in a first star performance.

On Friday January 27^th the IceCaps scored three first period goals and made them stand up for a 3-2 victory against the Manchester Monarchs. Kevin Clark had a goal and an assist and David Aebischer stopped 35 of 37 shots.

The IceCaps are not known for their fighting ability, but Garth Murray squared off against Monarchs enforcer Richard Clune and appeared to get the better of the tilt.

On Saturday January 28^th the IceCaps shut out the Portland Pirates 3 - 0 with Eddie Pasquale in net. Spencer Machacek scored once and had two assists. Machacek now has 34 points to lead the team in scoring.

Patrice Cormier, Moncton NB continued to be 'up and down', being returned to the IceCaps by the parent Winnipeg Jets. Cormier had an assist Saturday night on his return.Jason King, Corner Brook, NL is still out with an injury, but it is hoped he will return to action next weekend.
