The Mirvish production of War Horse has opened to stellar reviews in Toronto - included in those raves is Nova Scotia's Melanie Doane for her performance as the "Song Woman"

Here's one sent to us from SABS supporter & kindred spirit Jane Chapman...

How, with so few visual cues, we understand and feel and are carried along on a ride through the story. I had no idea how pivotal Melanie Doane's role is - part roaming storyteller, part every woman left behind, part moral conscience. It can't be easy 'randomly' weaving through bodies, playing the violin and singing with no accompaniment - but she does it all so beautifully.” Jane Chapman

While Steven Spielberg and his Dreamworks team bask in the glow of receiving 6 Academy Award Nominations for their motion picture WAR HORSE today... Nova Scotia’s own Melanie Doane is deep in rehearsals for the live theatre production of the show in Toronto.

Doane will play the “Song Woman” in the Mirvish production of the National Theatre of Great Britain’s and Tony Award Winning Best Play when it opens at The Princes of Wales Theatre in Toronto, ON on February 10, 2012.

We follow the award winning and always awesome artist on twitter so it’s been very cool to keep up with the progress of the production that way. You should too at @MelanieDoane.

A quick check of Melanie’s website says her team is in talks to develop a meet and greet schedule so that she can connect with her fans throughout the stage run of War Horse… we’ll keep you posted on that front. SABS

SABS Note of Noteworthiness

With Steven Spielberg at the helm and the Dreamworks team on the case anything was possible in terms of production when it came to bringing WAR HORSE to the big screen.

But as you might imagine, things were a little trickier bringing the popular UK children's novel by Michael Morpurgo (1982) to a live theatre stage – not to mention have it be with such award winning results.

Take a few moments and watch this video in which the creators of these magnificient ‘puppets’ from South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company discuss bringing Joey et al. to life in WAR HORSE the play. link
