Kiera Fraser – At Home Here in New Brunswick
Occupation: Owner of Je Suis Prest Boutique
Place of Birth: Etobicoke, ON
Currently Resides: Saint John, NB
Where’s your favourite place in New Brunswick to grab a coffee?
Java Moose in the Saint John City Market. I’m a sucker for their flavoured coffee and talented marketing. Nothing beats a lazy Saturday morning wandering around the market checking out local crafts, tasting a few locally made food samples and chatting with familiar faces.
Where’s your favourite place in New Brunswick to grab a pint?
Depends on the time of year! In the summer, a pint of blueberry ale from Pump House Breweries (made in Moncton, NB!) on the patio of the Saint John Ale House. In the winter time, snuggling up in a cozy booth at Britt’s Pub and enjoying a pint of Moosehead watching the snow fall on the old buildings on Princess Street.
Where’s your favourite place to shop in New Brunswick?
I’m biased, but my own store, Je Suis Prest Boutique in the heart of Uptown Saint John. I opened the business for nearly 3 years ago and love it more every day for the great people who work with me, the frequent shoppers who visit, and of course, the unique and different clothing I carry. When I need a pair of shoes to match my new outfit (which happens all too often…) I head up King Street to the Urban Shoe Myth for their amazing selection of designer shoes and great customer service.
Where in New Brunswick would we stand to see your favourite view?
My family and I spent our summers in Maces Bay, NB when I was growing up, and I identify that as home. So I’d have to say standing on the beach, taking in the two islands, the views of New River Beach, Deer Island and Grand Manan.
Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit New Brunswick:
1. Eat!! There are so many different types of restaurants and if I could, I’d try them all. The local seafood is to die for right off the fisherman’s boats. The blueberries baked into pies from McKay’s Blueberry Farm in Pennfield are mouth-watering. Tempura fiddleheads are a summer treat from our favorite sushi restaurant Sense of Tokyo.
2. All of the beaches and provincial parks make a city gal appreciate the outdoors. Spending a sunny, warm weekend on Parlee Beach in Shediac is a New Brunswick rite of passage. You could spend days exploring the beautiful scenery in the Fundy National Park, watching the tides change and checking out the wildlife. If it’s too chilly to dip your toes in the ocean, you can count on the beautiful Kennebecasis River for warmer water and great boating.
3. You must browse through all of the locally run shops throughout our province. I’m a firm believer of supporting local business and helping out our economy. There’s so many neat, independently owned shops that you can find everything you need and want without traveling too far.
What makes New Brunswick such a special place on earth for you?
The people! I moved here 3 years ago this month from Upstate New York and I’ve never felt more at home in anywhere I’ve lived. Everyone in this province seems to be so encouraging, helpful and friendly. It’s such a great place to run a business and it allows me to live life to the fullest in a beautiful setting every day.
