Smiling Jack on the IceCaps – Report #9

Posted: November 28, 2011

The good news is the IceCaps continue to lead the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the AHL by 2 points and are tied for second overall in the 30 team league. On the downside they picked up only 1 out of a possible 4 points over the weekend.

The Toronto Marlies, the former St. John's Maple Leafs, a very good hockey team, visited Mile One and scored a 4-3 overtime victory on Friday, November 25 and a 6-2 victory on Saturday November 26.

jason king (2)Friday’s contest was a well-played game and it was unfortunate there was a loser. Jason King, Corner Brook, NL scored his 8th goal and had an assist to lead the IceCaps. Nazem Kadri had 2 goals and 2 assists to lead the Marlies.

Saturday saw a different game. It may have been the loss of 3 top level defencemen to the parent Winnipeg Jets, it may have been the IceCaps playing without their Captain, Jason Jaffray, who is also in Winnipeg, it may have been Edward Pasquale having an off night in goal or more likely a combination of all three. In Nazem Kadri & Darryl Boyce of the Toronto Marliesany event the Marlies were full value for the victory and were again led by Kadri who had 2 goals and an assist. He was, undoubtedly, the best player during the 2 game series. Darryl Boyce, Summerside, PEI had 2 assists and a good series for the Marlies.

Spencer Machacek with 2 goals was one of the few bright spots for the IceCaps,

Winnipeg Jets HeadshotsPatrice Cormier, Moncton, NB took a hard hit near the end of the 2nd period of Saturday's game and while he took a shift after that, saw no action in the third period. Team reports have Cormier showing improvement, but state he will be monitored during and after practice.

The IceCaps will be on the road next week meeting the Bulldogs in Hamilton, on Friday December 2nd and take on the Marlies again, this time in Toronto on Sunday December 4th.

  1. Great job Smilin" Jack, sounds like a whale of a team in St. John's. They will surely provide some playoff excitement in Mile One! Keep up the great reports.

  2. Great Hockey card Smilin" Jack! What's the team you captained? Is that a Gold River team, or a Western Shore team?

  3. If I recall correctly, that is the Scotiabank team that played in the St. John's NL Civil Service League in the 60's.
